The McNab Stockdog Foundation

The McNab Stockdog Foundation Dedicated to the education and conservation of the McNab dog, a landrace breed established in California, circa late 1800’s.

Mission

Out of passion and commitment to the McNab Dog, The McNab Stockdog Foundation was born; to conserve the McNab as set for by historical precedence, a landrace breed established in northern California, circa late 1800s. We strive to conserve the breed through continually gathering and preserving relevant historical information and pursuing modern day scientific research by which to educate

the public. By this means, we aim to ensure genetic integrity for the sustainability of the breed, honoring yesterday’s heritage demonstrated in today’s McNab and leading into tomorrow.

The Basque Sheepherders of Idaho’s Snake River Plains
Across the vast sagebrush plains and mountain ranges of Idaho’s Snake River region near Boise and Twin Falls in the mid-1920s, Basque immigrant sheepherders formed seasonal herding crews. Single men (and some families) from the Pyrenees mountains lived in remote sheep camps for months at a time.
They tended large bands of 1,000–2,000 sheep, moving them between summer high pastures and winter lowlands. Men cooked over campfires (beans, lamb stew, bread), guarded against coyotes, sheared in spring, and lambed in winter. Pay was $30–$50 a month plus board. Families back in Basque towns received most earnings.
The group spoke Euskara, carved wooden spoons and played txistu flutes around fires, and held informal ardi-joko (sheep games). They supported each other through Basque boarding houses in Boise. In the livestock 1920s Intermountain West, these Basque herders supplied America’s wool and lamb, their group solitary endurance and cultural traditions thriving in isolation.

Buying a puppy is emotional, but it should also be treated like a big investment. The best way to get correct information is to ask specific questions, request proof and watch for vague answers.
