We always love success stories and just got one today. All animals need a different amount of time to adjust to a new environment and stories like this always brighten our day.
"This little guy has had quite a journey fitting into his new home. He hid underneath a bed for six weeks. During this time, he didn't do many things that most cats would do--he didn't explore his surroundings, he didn't try to find an escape route, he didn't like treats, he wouldn't engage with toys. However, he was a perfect gentleman, eating his food, using his litter box and drinking plenty of water.
During this time, members of the household did their best to spend time with him but he had little desire to engage with people. We really began to doubt whether or not he was going to work out. But then, precisely six weeks after coming into our home, he casually wandered out and began meowing at us. Suddenly his trust level had risen to a point where he would accept pets, and even sit on laps. At first he chose one friend, my 93 year old mom, and was afraid of everyone else. Over time, he has developed relationships with everyone in the family, on his own schedule and on his own terms.
Five months later, he is the star of the house. Whether he's playing with two toys at the same time, stealing pens out of peoples' hands, begging for treats or grabbing the television remote in order to change the channel (apparently he really wants us to get Paramount+) he is in charge. He is a delight. He is still remarkably well behaved. He is equal parts lap baby and vicious hunter. He has a huge vocabulary of hunting sounds, and also holds his own conversing with humans. He does have a temper, but he isn't violent or destructive. Instead, when he's had enough, he'll make his point with a firm paw slap.
I was reticent to adopt so soon after losing my long time pal last year, but my family and I are so happy to have this guy around. I'm glad I took a chance on a stray cat from Grand Junction. He's happy and healthy, and he is surrounded by a great deal of love."
