Did you know cruise control was invented by a blind engineer?

Ralph Teetor lost his sight at the age of five, but that didn't stop him from becoming a successful engineer and inventor.

In the 1940s, he developed the technology that would eventually become modern cruise control, a feature used in millions of vehicles today.

His story is a reminder that vision loss does not limit a person's ability to innovate, create, and make a lasting impact on the world.

What if your fingertips could decode the past?

Meet Dr. Geerat Vermeij, a renowned evolutionary biologist and paleontologist who has been blind since age 3.

Dr. Vermeij studies seashells and fossils through touch, using his fingertips to examine tiny details in their shapes, ridges, surfaces and structures. His research has helped scientists better understand how predators and prey influence one another’s evolution over millions of years.

His work earned him a MacArthur Fellowship and the Daniel Giraud Elliot Medal from the National Academy of Sciences for his contributions to evolutionary biology.

The coolest part?

The National Academy of Sciences recognized his ability to draw major conclusions about evolution by feeling details of shells that other scientists see.

Science is about observation, curiosity and asking great questions—and there’s more than one way to observe the world.

Did you know massage therapy can be an incredible career path for people who are blind or visually impaired?
Massage therapy is a hands-on profession where success depends on skills like touch, communication, body awareness, and the ability to recognize changes in muscle tension.
At World Services for the Blind, our Massage Therapy program gives students accessible, hands-on training designed to prepare them for a professional career. Graduates can pursue opportunities in spas, wellness centers, chiropractic and clinical settings, or even work toward building a business of their own.
For people who are blind or visually impaired and wondering, “What kind of career is possible for me?” massage therapy might be one they haven’t considered yet.
