Israel Elections Screening at Hillel 🇮🇱

Yesterday at Hillel, we gathered for a screening of the Israeli election exit polls, followed by an engaging conversation with Dr. Amichai Magen about Israel’s electoral system, how it works, and the process behind forming a government.

It was a great opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of Israeli democracy, explore the complexities of its political system, and engage in thoughtful discussion about the country’s political landscape.

Last night, our community gathered to hear Eliya Cohen and Ziv Abud’s extraordinary story of survival, love, and hope.

Eliya shared his experience of 505 days in Hamas captivity, while Ziv spoke about her fight to bring him home. Together, they reflected on the love and resilience that carried them through separation and into their life together today.

Thank you, Eliya and Ziv, for sharing your story with us, and to everyone who joined us for this meaningful evening. 💙

Amidst the busy start to the school year, we wanted to take a moment to look back at our trip to Poland with students this summer.

Freshman Retreat! 🌊🏄🏻‍♂️

Twenty freshmen and a few upperclassmen headed to Half Moon Bay early Saturday for a morning of surfing and community building.

With help from instructors, students learned the basics, navigated the waves, and enjoyed the beautiful coast, all while bonding and getting to know one another.

They returned to campus in the afternoon for a well-earned big lunch at Hillel!

A journey through Jewish Poland means moving between stories and different layers of history.

With Hillel Stanford, we began in Warsaw, walking from Umschlagplatz along the Route of Martyrdom to the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews. From there, the journey continued to Szydłów, a former shtetl where, at one point, one third of the population was Jewish. We then made our way to Kraków, exploring Kazimierz and encountering Jewish life in the city today. Along the way, a visit to the Wieliczka Salt Mines offered a glimpse into another part of Poland’s history.

An important part of study trips is the preparation that comes before difficult places and stories. Historical and cultural context gives participants the necessary context to thoughtfully engage with what they see.

At the same time, our programs create space to experience Poland as it is today. Jewish life here is not simply something found in museums or remembered through historic sites - it is part of the present.
