🌊 Why I Swim Wednesday: Meet Jedd Gallagher 🌊
For 14-year-old Jedd Gallagher and his family, Swim Across America is deeply personal.
Jedd swims in honor of his grandmother, Mary Jo Re, who passed away in 2024 from glioblastoma, and his father, John Gallagher, a stage 4 metastatic melanoma survivor.
John was diagnosed on his 30th birthday — which also happens to be June 20, the date of the swim! John battled cancer for eight years. His journey included multiple surgeries, lung metastases, brain surgeries, radiation, chemotherapy and ultimately the removal of his left lung. He was treated at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center by Jedd Wolchok, MD, PhD, a physician-scientist whose work helped advance immunotherapy as a standard approach to cancer treatment. Dr. Wolchok is a recipient of funding from Swim Across America.
Jedd Gallagher is named in honor of Dr. Wolchok, who helped save his dad’s life.
“Swim Across America is important to my family as we believe in funding those doctors and researchers who are trying to find cures for some of the most devastating cancers such as those that have impacted my family," noted Jedd. "I am proud to be named in honor of Dr. Jedd Wolchok, who saved my dad’s life.”
This is why we swim. 💙
Join Jedd and his Team Darien YMCA Piranhas, and hundreds of swimmers, volunteers and supporters at the June 20 Swim Across America - Fairfield County Open Water Swim as we make waves to fight cancer.
