👻Halloween Safety Reminder from ASCC!

Halloween can be a fun time for families, but it also brings a few extra safety concerns once the sun goes down.

Whether you're heading home from work, driving through your neighborhood, or out with your own family, take a few extra minutes to stay alert and help keep kids safe.

A few simple reminders for Halloween weekend:
🚨Slow down and stay alert while driving. Children may be excited, distracted, and harder to see at dusk or after dark.
🚨Watch blind spots carefully. Check around your vehicle before backing out of driveways or parking spaces.
🚨Be extra cautious at night. Increased foot traffic, costumes, and low visibility can create unexpected hazards.
🚨Check treats before eating. Parents should inspect candy and treats before children dig in.
Limit distractions. Put the phone down and keep your focus on the road and your surroundings.

Halloween safety may not be a jobsite topic, but awareness, preparation, and looking out for others applies everywhere.

When we think about head injuries in construction, falling objects often come to mind. But what happens when a worker slips, trips, or falls and their head strikes the ground or another object?

Traditional Type I hard hats are primarily designed for top-of-head impacts. Modern safety helmets can provide additional protection against lateral impacts and include retention systems to help keep the helmet in place when it's needed most.

A few things to consider when evaluating your head protection program:
➡️Look beyond falling objects. Consider same-level falls, struck-by hazards, and potential impacts from multiple directions.
➡️Evaluate helmet performance. Not all head protection offers the same level of protection. Consider independently developed research and helmet performance ratings.
➡️Don't overlook proper fit and retention. A helmet can only provide its intended protection when it's properly selected, fitted, and worn.

Meeting minimum requirements is important, but we shouldn't stop looking for ways to provide better protection.
