In December, Asian Elephant Support (AES) sponsored three Thai veterinarians to travel to the US for the 21st International Elephant Conservation and Research Symposium and the Global EEHV Summit 2025. The vets visited top elephant care facilities, learned about advanced elephant health management and EEHV (Elephant Endotheliotropic Herpesvirus) prevention, and explored collaboration opportunities for disease surveillance and vaccine use in Thailand. Key outcomes included sharing research, presenting case studies, and developing an action plan to improve EEHV diagnosis, treatment, and prevention for elephants in Thailand.

AES is proud to help support the collaboration of veterinary experts in the fight against EEHV. Donate today to continue our efforts to support the testing, treatment, and research of EEHV!

Sarpang District in southern Bhutan is facing a growing crisis of human-elephant conflict (HEC). As elephant habitats shrink and corridors are disrupted by development, elephants are increasingly entering farmlands and villages, leading to crop destruction, property damage, and even tragic human injuries and fatalities. With no government compensation scheme, affected families are left to bear the losses, fueling resentment and putting endangered Asian elephants at greater risk.

To help, AES and the Department of Forests & Park Services have equipped Quick Response Teams in all 10 affected Gewogs (administrative blocks) with high-powered, waterproof, rechargeable torches. These torches are a lifeline, helping teams safely deter elephants at night and protect both people and wildlife. Maintenance, monitoring, and community feedback are built into the project to ensure its lasting impact.

By empowering local teams, this initiative is reducing HEC incidents and improving safety for over 30,000 residents and 137 elephants. Together, we can foster peaceful coexistence and protect Bhutanโ€™s precious wildlife.

Help us support these vital efforts and help create a safer future for both communities and elephants!

๐Ÿซโœจ Hereโ€™s what one of our supporters shared about our Seeโ€™s Candy fundraiser:

"It was fun for me to support with the See's Candy fundraiser. They are a family favorite. My great uncle would send my grandmother a variety box every year around Christmas. She would then bring it with her when spending Christmas with us in AR. We all got one piece per evening until it was gone."

We are deeply honored to share that two very special elephants, Suki and Sophie, were remembered through memorial gifts to Asian Elephant Support. ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ’›

Suki spent 28 beloved years at Point Defiance Zoo, charming her keepers and visitors alike. She was known for her playful spirit, including the time she asked her keeper to please remove the hay stuck on her head! She passed on August 10, 2024, just one month before her 60th birthday.

Sophie, at the Little Rock Zoo, was a force of nature. Diagnosed with a condition that most elephants donโ€™t survive for long, she defied the odds for over seven years. Her keeper Kristin described her perfectly: โ€œThe one thing I loved most about Sophie was her sense of adventure. She was always up for anything.โ€

In their memory, the generous donations made in Sukiโ€™s honor will support elephant conservation work in Sumatra, and those made for Sophie will continue vital efforts in Myanmar.

To the keepers, crews, and zoo administrations who made these gifts possible โ€” thank you from the bottom of our hearts. These elephants were extraordinary ambassadors for their species, and their legacies will live on!
๐ŸŒฟ Rest gently, Suki and Sophie. Your stories matter.

Today, in the United States, we honor the mother-figures in our lives - moms, grandmas and aunties.

Naturally, we think Asian elephant matriarchs must be celebrated on this day too! And these leading ladies are more like us than you may know!

Elephant moms love unconditionally and fiercely, and will protect their calves at all costs. They rely on the other females of the herd to help raise and protect their young. And they must show and teach the young among the whole herd, skills those youngsters will in turn teach later generations.

So today we raise a trunk to all of the matriarchs out there - human and elephant - and say thank you for all that you do!

Make a donation in celebration of your Mom, your Grandma, or any person in your life who has cared for you like a Mother and help future generations of Asian elephants!
