Choosing Your Next Step Toward a Healthier Marriage

Picture a couple sitting across from me during an intake appointment at Encompass Connection Center. They have come looking for marriage help, but neither is sure what help could look like.

"I've asked him to open up to me for years," she says. "I've tried over and over. Now I'm tired, and I don't know if I want to keep trying."

He looks down, then answers. "I should have listened. I see that now. I want to work on our marriage, but I don't know where to start."

She pauses, then adds, "Somewhere along the way, I stopped telling him what I needed. I just got quieter."

This conversation is a composite of many I have heard. One spouse is ready to change while the other wonders whether the change will last. Both feel hurt, misunderstood, and unsure.

After listening, I often say the same thing:

"You are in the right place."

You can't give what you don't have.

That is a universal truth, whether it applies to material goods, finances, time … or in relationships.

Another principle that has been true, and emphasized throughout the Bible, is that the best life is found in balance ... not in extremes or the pursuit and consumption of "more."

Put these two principles together, and you can see that too much of a good thing isn't always good. Even when it comes to the spouse you love with all your heart, have built your life around, and know that only “death will do you part.”

We need our “alone time.” We need solitude, with God, in nature, with a good book … whatever you do to self-release the stresses of life. That time is not necessarily a withdrawal from your marriage.

In fact, healthy time apart can give you an opportunity to rest, reflect, grow, and return to your relationship with more to give.

So, yes, under certain conditions, you can spend too much time with your spouse...
