We are proud to announce that we have been approved for our fourth to honor .

Today, would have been Johnny Dillard Lytle’s 94th birthday, and our latest marker will honor the life and legacy of Springfield’s internationally renowned jazz musician, two-time Ohio Golden Gloves boxing champion, and advocate for racial equality.

Known as “Fast Hands,” Lytle recorded more than 30 jazz albums and performed alongside legends like , , and . His legacy extended beyond music, including his efforts to preserve and celebrate Black culture in his hometown.

The marker will stand beside his statue at Kuss Auditorium at the Clark State Performing Arts Center, where he gave his final performance just one month before his passing in 1995.

Thank you to Ohio History Connection for approving this marker, Clark State College for co-sponsoring it, and the Clark County Public Library and Clark County Historical Society at the Heritage Center for their research support.

Please also join us in thanking Dr. Marshall for his 85 hours of archival research that made this possible. Preserving history means ensuring the people who shaped our communities are never forgotten. We’re honored to help cement Johnny Lytle’s legacy in Ohio’s public memory.

Happy birthday, Johnny Lytle. Your legacy lives on!

The Black Child Book Fair Tour
Saturday, October 17 • 10:00 AM–2:00 PM • Northwest Branch

Come discover what diversity in books can look like. Explore a wide selection of books written by and featuring Black children in positive and empowering ways. Representation matters, and this event encourages all children to see themselves reflected in the stories they read. Hosted by the Black Child Book Fair, a nonprofit organization founded by Darryl Harvey, this tour promotes African American-focused reading materials that support the educational, emotional, developmental, and social growth of youth from diverse backgrounds.
