WHAT DID JESUS SAY TO THE CHURCH AT EPHESUS?
In Revelation 2:5–6, Jesus said to the church at Ephesus:
"Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place—unless you repent. But this you have, that you hate the deeds of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate." (NKJV)
Notice that Jesus said He HATED the deeds of the Nicolaitans!
What was the doctrine of the Nicolaitans?
Early Church fathers described the Nicolaitans as a heretical group associated with compromise and participation in pagan practices.
The Doctrine of Compromise: The Nicolaitans were described as teaching that there was nothing wrong with serving Christ while simultaneously participating in pagan practices and temple sacrifices.
Blending in with the Culture: Their philosophy encouraged new believers to relax their moral boundaries and blend into society.
They argued that by no longer maintaining strict separation from pagan rituals, Christians could make peace with their neighbors and be more easily accepted into society. Ephesus was home to the famous Temple of Artemis, also known as Diana.
Does any of this sound familiar today?
THREE INDICATORS OF MODERN-DAY NICOLAITANISM

1. No emphasis on holy living or separation from the world.
The attitude is that it's okay to be a Christian and still follow pagan practices.

2. Devaluation of doctrinal integrity.
"It doesn't matter what the Bible says. Everyone does it!"
"My family has done this for years!"

3. Rejection of absolute biblical authority.
Instead of allowing God's Word to determine what is right and wrong, people allow culture, entertainment, traditions, and popular opinions to determine their convictions.
BUT IF WE ARE BIBLE-BELIEVING CHRISTIANS, SHOULDN'T THE BIBLE BE OUR FINAL AUTHORITY?

WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY ABOUT FEAR?
2 Timothy 1:7: "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind."
FEAR AND FAITH ARE OPPOSITES!
Fear is faith in what the devil can do in your life!
Fear takes advantage of a lack of knowledge.
1 John 4:18: "There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear..."
When we realize How much God loves us and is ever present to protect us we will not be afraid.
Isaiah 41:10: "Fear not, for I am with you..."
God commands us not to be afraid!
Romans 8:15: "For you did not receive the spirit of bo***ge again to fear..."
Fear keeps us from doing what God has called us to do!
For example, if you are afraid of germs and God tells you to go to a part of the world where sanitation is a problem, that fear can keep you from obeying God.
KNOWING THIS, WHY DO WE WATCH THINGS THAT PRODUCE FEAR AND MAGNIFY WHAT THE DEVIL CAN DO IN OUR LIVES?
Why are we filling our minds with things that produce fear instead of faith?
Knowing what the Bible says about these things, why do Christians decorate their homes and yards with ghosts, demons, witches, and skeletons of deceased people this time of year?
Why do we celebrate fear and death and darkness
why do we watch things that cause fear?
CHRISTIANITY IS ABOUT LIFE AND LIGHT, NOT DEATH AND DARKNESS!
Why would we want to fill our minds with things that produce faith in how big and powerful the devil wants us to believe he is is?
Hollywood and television are constantly showing us how big and powerful the devil supposedly is!
Movies like The Exorcist have built their appeal around terrifying depictions of demonic power, making demons look bigger than God and making the priest look like a wimp with no spiritual authority over the devil!
Even supernatural comedies like Ghostbusters turn spirits into entertainment and make them look bigger than they really are!
The focus is often on how BIG, FRIGHTENING, AND OVERWHELMING demons are, when in reality, THEY ARE NOTHING COMPARED TO THE NAME OF JESUS AND THE POWER OF HIS BLOOD!
I remember one minister describing a time when he saw a demon on a man's shoulder. He said it looked like a little monkey-like creature.
A LITTLE IMP!
Not some huge, big, bad, ugly monster!
The devil wants us to believe he is bigger and more powerful than he really is!
I believe that's why he inspires movie makers to portray him the way they do.
He wants Christians to be afraid of him!
But the Bible says in 1 John 4:4:
"He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world."
THE DEVIL IS NOT BIGGER THAN JESUS!

WHAT ARE GHOSTS?
We know from the Bible that there are only two eternal destinations for human beings after death: HEAVEN OR HELL.
Human spirits do not roam around the earth haunting homes they once lived in or bothering people!
In the Old Testament, God specifically forbade Israel from attempting to contact people who had died.
Deuteronomy 18:10–12 forbids witchcraft, sorcery, interpreting omens, consulting mediums, and CALLING UP THE DEAD!
So, what are ghosts?
The Bible talks about FAMILIAR SPIRITS.
The term appears 21 times in the bible, familiar spirits are demon spirits that are familiar with a person who once lived.
When people try to contact the dead, it is a familiar spirit that responds, NOT THE DEAD PERSON!
If there is a spirit in your home causing fear, I promise you, IT IS NOT FROM GOD!
It's not even your dead grandma who died in the house!
She's in one of two places, and she cannot come back to earth and haunt your home!
2 Timothy 1:7 says, "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind."
If we see a manifestation of a spirit or what people call a "ghost," I believe we can know that it is a demonic spirit attempting to cause fear or impersonate someone who has died.
But here's the good news!
CHRISTIANS HAVE AUTHORITY OVER DEMONIC SPIRITS IN THE NAME OF JESUS!
If we are submitted to God, we can take authority over those spirits and command them to leave in Jesus' name!
James 4:7 says:
"Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you."
If you're dealing with something like this and you're not comfortable taking authority over it yourself, call me. I'll be glad to come pray with you and help you get rid of it!
HOWEVER, YOU WILL HAVE TO KEEP THE DOOR SHUT SO THEY DON'T COME BACK!
Remember that Ephesians 4:27 says Don;t give the devil a place, foothold, or opportunity in your life.

GOD CALLED WITCHCRAFT AND SORCERY DETESTABLE!
Let's look at what God actually said in Deuteronomy 18:9–12:
Verse 9: "When you enter the land that the LORD your God is giving you, do not imitate the DETESTABLE ways of the nations there."
Verse 10: "Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, PRACTICES DIVINATION OR CONJURY, INTERPRETS OMENS, PRACTICES SORCERY,"
Verse 11: "CASTS SPELLS, CONSULTS A MEDIUM OR SPIRITIST, OR INQUIRES OF THE DEAD."
Verse 12: "For whoever does these things is DETESTABLE TO THE LORD. And because of these DETESTABLE THINGS, the LORD your God is driving out the nations before you."
Look at the strong language God used!
He called these practices DETESTABLE!
What does detestable mean?
Disliked
Hated
Not accepted
Despised
Abhorred
Utterly repulsive
Something that makes you want to throw up!
IT WAS AN ABOMINATION!
If God our Father feels this strongly about witchcraft and sorcery, WHY DO WE HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH IT?
WHY DOES GOD HATE WITCHCRAFT SO MUCH?
WITCHCRAFT SEEKS SPIRITUAL POWER FROM THE WRONG SOURCE!
God wants His people to depend on Him for supernatural help, direction, and protection.
Witchcraft and sorcery seek supernatural power through another source. THE DEVIL!
Think about it this way.
God is described in Scripture as a jealous God.
What if a husband discovered that his wife was being unfaithful and going around with other men?
Would he be happy about that?
Of course not!
God wants His people to be faithful to Him!
Why would we go looking to other spiritual sources for what we should be seeking from our Heavenly Father?
Deuteronomy 18:10–12 says that those who practice witchcraft, interpret omens, consult mediums, and practice sorcery are committing an ABOMINATION before the Lord.
What does abomination mean?
Outrage
Disgrace
Atrocity
Horror
Hated or hatred
Detestable
Disgust
Repulsive — something that makes you want to throw up!
ALL OF THAT IS PRETTY STRONG LANGUAGE!!!!
LOOK AT EXODUS 22:18!
"You shall not permit a sorceress to live." (NKJV)
Under the Old Testament Law, God commanded severe punishment for those who practiced sorcery.
That's how seriously God dealt with witchcraft among His covenant people!
In Bible times under that law, someone actually practicing the kind of sorcery portrayed in Harry Potter would have faced the death penalty!
I'm not suggesting Christians today should carry out those Old Testament penalties. I'm pointing out how seriously God treated these practices under the Law!
And yet today we celebrate witchcraft and call it fun, innocent entertainment!
GOD HATED WITCHCRAFT THEN, AND HE STILL HATES WITCHCRAFT TODAY!
GOD DID NOT GO THROUGH THERAPY AND ANGER MANAGEMENT BETWEEN THE OLD AND NEW TESTAMENTS AND NOW HE'S OKAY WITH WHAT HE DETESTED IN THE OLD TESTAMENT!
God hasn't changed His mind about evil!
