🎉 Congratulations to our own Dr. Yolanda Marrow, DNP, RN! 🎉

We’re so proud to celebrate MLKFS board member Dr. Yolanda Marrow on her appointment as the new Nursing Director for the Emergency Department at Cooley Dickinson Hospital, starting July 13! 👏

With more than 25 years of nursing leadership experience — spanning emergency and trauma care, quality and safety, and clinical operations — Dr. Marrow has spent her career lifting up teams, strengthening patient care, and mentoring the next generation of nurse leaders. That same spirit of service is exactly what she brings to our MLKFS family. 💛

Dr. Marrow’s rise into this new role is Love in Action in real time — another example of what it looks like to build Beloved Community, one leader at a time. And representation matters: seeing her step into this position is a powerful reminder to our young people, our staff, and our whole community of what’s possible when talent, dedication, and heart come together. 🌟

✨ Special delivery last week!

🎓 Five HBCU Scholar Send-Off baskets made their way to our Martin Luther King, Jr. Family Services HBCU Tour Alumni as they prepare for their first year away from home.

Each basket was thoughtfully filled with toiletries, laundry supplies, school supplies, and dorm room essentials — everything our scholars need to feel a little more ready, and a little more loved, as they step into this new chapter.

These baskets were made possible by the The Greater Springfield, MA Chapter of The Links, Incorporated — a chapter chartered in 1986 dedicated to enriching, sustaining, and ensuring the culture and economic survival of African Americans.

Huge thanks to the proud Links Inc. members who personally delivered the baskets to our MLKFS staff (pictured left to right): Attorney Alesia Days, Marie Moore, Dr. Tyonne Hinson, Kimberly Robinson Williams, and Sheree Denson. Your generosity is sending our scholars off with confidence and community behind them! 💛

From our first-ever MLKFS Family Reunion to our Anti-Racism Staff Trainings and our Social Justice Awards; from our Mason Square TDI Community Dinner to our annual MLK Day Celebrations — and so many more — Ed was not only a fixture at every one of our events, but at community events across the region. He was always there, willing to capture the visual stories of pain, healing, joy, and celebration.

He told the story of our people through his lens.

A Gathering Around Frederick Douglass

Through our MassHumanities Clemente program, we gathered at our Community Center for a reading of Frederick Douglass “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?”— voices coming together not just to read history, but to sit with it, reckon with it, and carry it forward.

Staff member Patricia Bernard read alongside Ayanna Crawford of the Springfield School Committee, Dr. Latoya Bosworth of MassHumanities & A Queen’s Narrative, Sheldon Smith, our 2026 Social Justice Awardee and Artist & Community Outreach Manager at Make-It-Springfield — and joined by many more community members and partners who showed up to read, reflect, and be present.

The gathering was led by Clemente alumna Dr. Toni McComb, who also took her turn at the podium.

Open to all, this was a meaningful reminder that the work of freedom is unfinished. As keepers of the dream, we know how far we still have to go — and gatherings like this one keep us building the Beloved Community. And gratitude to Jamila Jackson for the ancestral music, a perfect setting to immerse ourselves in this moment.

This weekend, our Board and staff had the privilege of learning together with the Women of Color Health Equity Collective, grounding ourselves in the foundational framework for cultural humility developed by Tervalon and Murray-García.

Cultural humility is not a destination—it is a lifelong practice. Together, we explored four guiding tenets that will continue to shape how we lead, serve, and partner with our community:

✨ Lifelong self-reflection and self-critique
✨ Recognizing and addressing power imbalances in our relationships with the youth and families we serve
✨ Building authentic, mutually beneficial partnerships with communities—not simply working for them
✨ Holding ourselves and our institution accountable to these principles every day

One of the most meaningful conversations centered on responding to microaggressions. We affirmed a shared commitment to call out when harm needs to stop and call in when there’s an opportunity to deepen understanding and strengthen relationships.

This isn’t a one-day training or a policy to place on a shelf. It’s a practice. A commitment. A muscle we will continue to build together as we strive to create spaces where every person is seen, valued, and treated with dignity.

Thank you to the Women of Color Health Equity Collective for creating a thoughtful, courageous, and transformative learning experience.

On this stage, Mason Square came alive with the energy of our young people. 🤎

We were proud to join the Juneteenth Committee — founded by City Council President Tracye and City Councillor Justin Hurst — for a powerful, youth-centered kickoff celebration that reminded us exactly why we do this work.

The evening featured an original play produced by Fieldhouse Creative Director Rémani Lizana, and a panel moderated by our very own Youth Team Leader Moses Kemoh — two young leaders whose vision and voice filled the room with purpose.

A special thank you to the Youth Mental Health Coalition for their generous support of both the play and the panel. Your investment in our young people’s stories and wellbeing means everything.

This is what the Beloved Community looks like in action.
