Did you know that First Lutheran Church's ties to Trinity Lutheran Seminary run deep? Dr. Hamma of Wittenberg University's Theology School, was also the pastor of our church from 1869 to 1878. The Department of Theology was eventually renamed the Hamma School of Theology before merging with Capital Seminary (also known Evangelical Lutheran Theological School) to form Trinity Lutheran Seminary. We give thanks for our deep historical relationships with Wittenberg University, Trinity Lutheran Seminary, Capital University, and Hamma Library at Trinity.

Hamma Library holds the archives for Trinity Lutheran Seminary. Sometimes, in looking for something unrelated, cool things are discovered.

In 1978, Hamma combined with Capital's seminary to form what is today Trinity Lutheran Seminary. The Hamma campus is long gone, but look closely at this photo and you'll see three pieces that made the journey east and are still part of Trinity.
On the right, the carved pulpit balustrade now lives in the Alumni Room. The stained glass window above the altar, depicting the closing words of Matthew 28:20, hangs in the atrium where the light still passes through it daily. And just visible on the far left, the eagle lectern. The platform is gone, but the eagle itself rests in Hamma Library, where it watches over the reading room and gives the space some of its character.

The library, of course, also carries the name forward. Hamma Library takes its name from this divinity school, and every time a student walks in to study, almost fifty years on, they walk into a small act of remembrance.

For all those curious and caring souls, Cathie Fails is doing just fine. The procedure was more complicated than expected, but she has incredible doctors at OSU in Columbus, and as we all know a very strong spirit. Within an hour or two she’ll be on her feet for the first time and able to see the view.

We have been loving our Springfield neighbors and beyond since 1841. Did you know that First Lutheran Church planted Wittenberg University in 1845 and later planted five other Lutheran Churches in Springfield? For the first five years of its life, Wittenberg University, then known as Wittenberg College, held classes in what is now our fellowship hall, named Wittenberg Hall. In regard to the churches that First helped plant, many have now closed, but one of those churches went on to merge with another area Lutheran Church, becoming our sibling church, Good Shepherd Evangelical Lutheran Church, Springfield Ohio, next door to Witt. We are doing new things at First and would love to have you visit with us and invite you to meet our new pastor, Keith Monroe. We currently worship on Sundays at 9:30 am. We are excited to meet you!

This weekend, we were blessed to welcome Pastor Keith Monroe and his family to the First Lutheran Church family. We are excited to begin this new chapter in the life of our congregation and look forward to all that God has in store for our church community.

We have established a new YouTube page for First Lutheran Church (Springfield, Ohio). This will make it easier for those not on Facebook to watch worship services. Services will still be streamed live here and uploaded to the YouTube page later in the day Sunday. Videos are included as far back as Good Friday and will be posted weekly going forward.The link to the page is below. Please share this information with those that you know that are not on facebook.

First Lutheran Church is an ELCA Lutheran Church located in Springfield Ohio. Traditional worship is held on Sunday mornings at 9:30. We are a downtown church and have been at the same location in Springfield for nearly 200 years. Wittenberg University held its original classes in this facility.
