Ten years ago this month, Darin Carter was shot in the line of duty while serving a warrant as a Taney County deputy. He came home, but the hard part came later — and for a while, he didn't think a service dog was for him. "We already have a dog," he figured.

His wife Julie nudged him over to our booth at an event anyway. He filled out the application. About a year later, he met Dozer.

This morning Darin and Dozer joined our Vice President, Summer Gerhardt, on KLFC Radio's Good Morning Ozarks with Keith O'Neill and Charlie Ingram, and Darin put it plainly: since Dozer came into his life, his nightmares have dropped by about half. "As I'm watching his back, he's watching mine."

That's the whole mission in one sentence. Thank you, Keith and Charlie, for having us — and thank you, Darin, for telling your story so others know this is out there for them.

Inside this prison training room, a rescue dog is learning to save a life. This isn't just basic obedience it’s a high-stakes mission where handlers in correctional facilities dedicate months to preparing these pups for one job: standing by a veteran’s side.

Why this matters: These dogs are often rescues given a second chance to provide a first chance at freedom for veterans battling PTSD and mobility challenges. It’s a powerful circle of healing from handler, to dog, to hero.

Shelters like the Humane Society of Southwest Missouri do that quiet work every single day: feeding, vetting, walking, and waiting with animals nobody has claimed yet. Pairing day isn't the finish line. It's the start of a new phase of training.

Once a K9 reports for duty, the recruit and the veteran move into Advanced Training together: refreshing obedience, sharpening public access skills, and learning how to work as a team out in the real world. Earlier this week, some of our veteran and K9 teams were back at it in a Handler Helper class, a standing session where our graduates keep their skills sharp and stay connected with other veterans who understand the journey.

We stay with every team for the life of the dog's service. But the training only works if the veteran puts in the time too: practicing at home, reinforcing commands, and building the trust that makes a service dog reliable in public. A dog and a veteran only become a team when they both show up for it.

That's the deal we make with every veteran we serve. We don't stop supporting the team, and we ask them not to stop working with their K9.

K9s For Camo provides service dogs to veterans at no cost and that commitment includes the equipment, food, and bedding needed for a successful start. But the real priority is the ongoing guidance. We provide three rounds of advanced classes to ensure that the veteran and their K9 become a seamless, effective team for the long haul.

Why the click? 🐾

The clicker is a clear “yes” signal. It tells the dog, “That behavior is exactly what we wanted!”

The treat is the reward that follows. When the click and treat are paired together, the dog learns that the sound means something good is coming.

This makes training clearer, faster, and more fun—for both the dog and the trainer.
