SAA is home to many activities for all ages in the Art School for classes, workshops and camps; Historic Edwards Place for tours and events; Michael Victor II Art Library for book loans and scholarly presentations; Art Outreach, a free regional school resource; Art Gallery for local and national artist exhibitions. We host festivals year round from the Edwards Place Fine Art Fair to the Molly Schlich Film Series.

Join us next Friday, October 23rd, from 6-9pm for a free glass blowing demo in our Baima Glass Studio! Our glass crew is going to attempt to break the world record for worlds largest glass blown pumpkin! Attempt #1 last year was soooooooooo close but slumped at the last minute. We are confident we can do it this year!

To close out Hispanic Heritage Month, we would like to introduce you to a collaborative couple that we think you should know about!

Jacobo and María Ángeles are contemporary wood carvers and alebrije artists from Mexico! Fun fact: Alebrije was created in 1936 by paper mache artist Pedro Linares Lopez after he saw mystical beings through an illness induced hallucination! Jacobo and María have taken this art form across the world, and were even invited to Vatican City to install an alebrije nativity scene for Pope Francis. In 1994, the Jacobo and María Ángeles Workshop was founded in San Martín Tilcajete for them to teach, to share, and to contribute to their community through this unique artform!

Be sure to stop by our SAA Collective at 105 North 5th Street anytime Wednesday through Saturday from 11 AM - 5 PM to plunge into "Living Waters," a beautiful underwater-themed exhibit featuring watercolor by Debbie Megginson and glassworks by Linda Post-Lucas. Now on display until November 11!

In honor of Indigenous Peoples Day, we would like to highlight an artist that we think you should know about!

Raven Halfmoon is a contemporary ceramic sculptor and painter from Oklahoma. She is part of the Caddo tribe, and combines her educational background of studio art and anthropology to add a contemporary spin to traditional Caddo pottery techniques. The tactile nature and color palette of her work are intentionally used to connect to her ancestral people, their history, and lands.

Our staff members are obsessed with her and generally think she is a bad*ss woman! Give her a follow on Instagram at to see more of her amazing work!

Looking for something to do this Friday, October 16th? Head down to St. Louis to the Third Degree Glass Factory to witness some intense glass competition! Third Degree has invited our glass crew to their annual "Death Match" to battle it out for a competition with hot glass, sweat... and maybe some tears. The losing piece? It gets smashed with a giant pumpkin! Check out Third Degree's website for more information!

Our annual Art Synergy event is around the corner! Join us on November 14th for an evening full of incredible art made by community leaders, a live auction of the pieces, a silent auction, a raffle, a bartending battle, and so much more! Looking for something to do this Friday night? Fill it with art! Please join us for the opening reception of the Sangamon Watercolor Society’s annual exhibition in our M.G. Nelson Family Gallery (700 N 4th St) on Friday, October 9, from 5:30-7:30PM. Can’t make the opening? No problem! The exhibit will run until October 31st!
