Imagine a deer so tiny that it could almost stand next to four apples stacked on top of each other. This animal actually exists, and it’s called a pudu.
This tiny deer lives in the forests of South America, and some species are incredibly small. The northern pudu stands only about 13 to 14 inches tall at the shoulder and rarely weighs more than a few pounds.
But its tiny size actually gives it a huge advantage in its environment. It can easily move through thick vegetation, squeeze between trees, and navigate obstacles that would be much harder for a larger deer to get around.
And it doesn’t stay looking like a baby forever. Males grow small antlers, while young pudus have white spots that help them blend in and remain hidden among the vegetation.
The most surprising part is that, despite its tiny size, the pudu still has all the classic traits you’d expect from a deer. It can run, jump, and even climb over fallen logs.
So yes, saying it’s “as tall as four apples” is mostly a fun comparison… but for this little animal, it’s actually not that far from reality.
