Why do governments hand over their people's data and money to US tech giants? 🤔

Sometimes it's less about what they gain, and more about what happens if they don't.

Cory Doctorow broke it down at our conference Resisting Big Tech, and the answer is as alarming as you'd expect.

The fight against corporate courts continues ✊🏽 Our takeaway from the First Conference on Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels in Colombia

Tech can be a public good. But only if we fight for it. ✊

On Saturday, activists and researchers at the frontline of the fight for digital justice took the stage at our Resisting Big Tech conference, and here's what they had to say.

From regulating big tech to resisting data centres, the message was clear: this isn't someone else's problem to solve. The resistance is growing, and it's global.

Thank you to everyone who came out to our conference, Resisting Big Tech Empires last weekend!

Across the day, we explored the foundations and reach of big tech’s power, from physical infrastructure to the economic architecture, from AI and automated warfare to data centres, surveillance and monopoly control. But more importantly, we focused on what it takes to challenge it.

Because this isn’t inevitable, or unbeatable.

Three actions you can take today:

1. Watch back our opening and closing plenaries - links in comments.

2. Join our call on the UK to end all public contracts with Palantir: https://act.globaljustice.org.uk/get-palantir-out-uk-public-services

3. If you care about this work, and want to see it grow, please become a member by signing up for a Direct Debit of just £3 per month or more: https://www.globaljustice.org.uk/get-involved/support-our-work/join-as-a-member/

Big tech’s power can feel overwhelming. But Saturday showed what’s possible when we come together: to understand it, challenge it, and start building alternatives.

Let’s keep going.

This week countries around the world will head to the world’s first conference on phasing out fossil fuels in Colombia - and addressing ISDS is on the agenda.

Ahead of this, we have joined 340+ organisations globally to call on governments to start freeing themselves from corporate courts! These secret tribunals threaten a just transition from fossil fuels and the urgent need for a social and ecological transformation for people and the planet.

This comes as our latest joint research revealed that the UK ranks WORST in Europe for propping up the ISDS regime. As the UK attends the Santa Marta conference this week, it must seize this opportunity to change course.

Today we went to Downing Street to hand in thousands of signatures calling for a Fossil Fuel Treaty, ahead of the Santa Marta conference starting this weekend in Colombia.

The UK is joining governments from around the world to discuss how to accelerate the switch away from fossil fuels - which has never been more urgent.

Everyone who campaigned for a Fossil Fuel Treaty helped to make this happen by demanding that governments create a dedicated space to negotiate a globally just fossil fuel phase-out.

A massive thank you to everyone who has been part of this campaign!

NEW REPORT: The UK ranks WORST in Europe for propping up a secretive ‘corporate court’ system that allows corporations to SUE countries outside of national legal systems.

Our new report and interactive scorecard with PowerShift e.V. Climate Action Network Europe (CAN Europe) and others reveals a highly concentrated system where a small group of European countries headed by the UK account for a disproportionate share of the treaties, cases and climate risk of ISDS.

However, it also shows some countries taking alternative paths. We are calling on European governments - including the UK - to begin an exit from the ISDS regime.

Read the full report and view the scorecard at the link in comments.
