Honor Flight Houston is a non-profit organization, and a proud member of the Honor Flight Network, created solely to honor America's veterans for all their sacrifices. Serving Harris, Montgomery, Liberty, Chambers, Galveston, Brazoria, Fort Bend and Waller counties, Honor Flight Houston transports our heroes from Houston, Texas to Washington, D.C. to visit and reflect at their memorials. The flights and tours that Honor Flight Houston provides World War II veterans are absolutely FREE. Honor Flight Houston is our way of paying a tribute to those who gave so much—a memorable and rewarding TOUR of HONOR! Of all of the wars in recent memory, it was World War II that truly threatened our very existence as a nation—and as a culturally diverse, free society. Now, with more than 1,000 World War II veterans dying each day, our time to express our thanks to these brave men and women is running out. Mission Statement:

Transport America's veterans to Washington, D.C. to visit those memorials dedicated to honor their service and sacrifices. Goal:

Helping every single veteran in America, willing and able of getting on a plane or a bus, visit THEIR memorial. Priority:

Top priority is given to America's most senior heroes — survivors of World War II and any veteran with a terminal illness who wishes to visit THEIR memorial. The program will naturally transition to Korean War, Vietnam War and all other veterans who served, on a chronological basis. Eligibility:

All men and women serving stateside or overseas. Philosophy:

Since America felt it was important to build a memorial to the service and the ultimate sacrifice of her veterans, the Honor Flight Network believes it's equally important that they actually get to visit and experience THEIR memorial. Motto:

We can’t all be heroes. Some of us have to stand on the curb and clap as they go by.” - Will Rogers

⭐️ Flight #38 Veteran Joe R. Rodriguez 🇺🇸

U.S. Army | Specialist Four (SP4) | Vietnam Veteran
Service Dates: June 1971 – June 1974
Vietnam Service: January 1972 – January 1973

At just 19 years old, following his high school graduation, Joe R. Rodriguez made the decision to volunteer to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Army. That decision marked the beginning of a journey defined by dedication, perseverance, and a commitment to duty.

Joe completed his Basic Training at Fort Lewis, Washington, before attending Advanced Individual Training (AIT) at Fort Lee, Virginia. He trained as a 76P Army Stock Control and Supply man, a role that required organization, precision, and responsibility. During his training, Joe learned to operate his first computer, an NCR 500. Little did he know that this early experience would help shape his future career. More than 50 years later, he would retire after a career that continued to involve managing computers—a remarkable connection between his military training and his professional life.

In December 1971, Joe received his orders for Vietnam. He arrived in January 1972 and was stationed at Phu Bai, where he was assigned to the 8th Radio Research Field Station. On March 30, 1972, the North Vietnamese Army launched its major spring offensive, known as the Easter Offensive. As the conflict intensified, a portion of Joe's unit was relocated to Camp Holloway in Pleiku, where he continued his military service during a pivotal period of the Vietnam War.
After completing his tour in Vietnam in January 1973, Joe returned to the United States and served the remainder of his enlistment at Fort Lewis, Washington. He honorably completed his three years of Army service in June 1974.
Joe's dedication and service were recognized through numerous military decorations and awards, including the Bronze Star Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars, the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm Unit Citation Badge, the Republic of Vietnam Civil Actions Honor Medal, First Class Unit Citation Badge, the Meritorious Unit Commendation, the Marksman Qualification Badge with R***e Bar, and the National Defense Service Medal.

Joe's story is one of answering the call to serve at a young age, carrying out his responsibilities during a chapter in our nation's history, and bringing the skills he learned in the Army into his civilian career. His service reflects the dedication of a generation of Americans who put their country before themselves.

This weekend, we honor Specialist Four Joe R. Rodriguez—not only for his service in the United States Army and his time in Vietnam, but also for his dedication, perseverance, and the example he sets as a veteran who answered his country's call.

Thank you for your service and welcome to Flight #38! ✈️

⭐Honor Flight Houston - Flight #38 Veteran George D. Ussery 🇺🇸

George Ussery served in the United States Navy from June 1968 to January 1972, proudly wearing the rate of Hospital Corpsman, HM3. His early service took him to USN Hospital Charleston, South Carolina, where he worked from December 1968 to January 1971. He later served aboard the USNS Barrett (T-AP-196) from February 1971 to January 1972, supporting missions connected to Pusan and Vietnam.

George remembers returning from Pusan and Vietnam in 1972 and being surprised by how Vietnam veterans were treated at the time. He recalls a law that gave Vietnam veterans with fewer than six months left in service a choice to re-enlist or be released — and he chose to separate.

During his time at USN Hospital Charleston, George was assigned to ICU and Recovery, and it’s where he met the woman who would become the love of his life. As he put it in his own words, “the Navy didn’t control my heart!” They married in July 1972, and they’re still going strong today.

Aboard the Barrett, George served as a general duty Corpsman, working across sick call, the lab, X‑ray, surgical, and pharmacy. The doctor he worked under believed Corpsmen should learn all areas, and George embraced that fully. He recalls the Barrett, Upshur, and Geiger — one ship in Vietnam, one in the South China Sea, and one in Busan — each playing a role in the mission.

Today, we honor George for his dedication, compassion, and service across multiple commands and theaters. His commitment to caring for others embodies the very best of the Hospital Corps.

Thank you for your service and welcome to Flight #38, HM3 Ussery! ✈️🇺🇸
