Happy Indigenous Peoples’ Day! We are proud to be Wabanaki every day and are lucky to call these homelands our own. We hope today you can celebrate Indigenous people no matter where you are and encourage you to learn about our unique cultures, traditions, and presence as Wabanaki citizens. Our people have thrived on these lands since time immemorial and will continue to be the original stewards of this place we call home. Every day is Indigenous Peoples’ Day and we look forward to this new dawn we are approaching with you all as we go forward together.

Woliwon/Woliwoni/Welalin to everyone who joined our celebration. We will share more soon but are so thankful for our friends and allies who continue to show up and celebrate us.

Happy first day of Fall! 🍂 And with the new season here, we’re kicking off the season of giving at the South Portland Food Cupboard with a FOOD DRIVE! 🍁🌽🥕

As families begin preparing for the holidays, our community continues to rely on the Cupboard for nutritious food and support.

We’re inviting you, our neighbors, local businesses, schools, organizations, and community groups to Fall Into Giving and help us fill our shelves for the season ahead.

Ready to get involved? Here are ways to participate:

🍁 Donate food! Pick up a few extra items during your next grocery trip. Some of our most-needed items include: cereal of any kind, boxed pasta, gravy, canned fruit, canned veggies, and pet food.

🌽 Host a food drive. Gather your coworkers, classmates, friends, family, neighbors, or community group and collect food for the Cupboard.

🥫 Give a financial gift. Monetary donations of any amount allows us to bulk purchase the food and supplies we need most. https://www.southportlandfoodcupboard.org/donate

➡️ Physical Donations can be dropped off at the South Portland Food Cupboard, 405 Western Ave., Suite 17, South Portland. Our outdoor donation box is available 24/7.

Today, we paused our Thursday distribution for a very special reason: to dedicate our new Sedgeley Recipient Check-In area in honor of Steve and Celine Sedgeley. 🎉🎊

Steve and Celine have been longtime supporters of South Portland Food Cupboard, giving their time, expertise, and generosity to help strengthen our organization. Steve served on our Board of Directors and as Board Treasurer, and his countless hours of work helping us implement PantrySoft has had a lasting impact on how we organize and offer our services and ultimately support our recipients. Words don’t touch the amount of work put into this!

Both Steve and Celine have consistently supported SPFC and believed in the importance of making sure our neighbors have access to food with dignity and respect. We find it is especially fitting that their name will now be part of our Recipient Check-In Area, a space where neighbors begin their visit with us each week.

Please join us in saying thank you to Steve and Celine, for all they have done and continue to do for SPFC. We are so grateful!!

160 racers, 16 years of community, and an incredible outpouring of support for our neighbors! THANK YOU! 🏃‍♀️‍➡️🥳

We’re SO grateful to everyone who came out to support the 5K benefiting South Portland Food Cupboard! This year’s race had the largest turnout in its 16-year history, with 160 racers hitting the course. Thank you to the race host, the St. Maximilian Kolbe Church, for organizing this fundraiser. 🏃‍➡️

I think Dolly would have loved to know that many of the books she gave to children, children have passed on to Book Fairy for us to give to other children, free, again, at food pantries…because…

On Tuesday, we celebrated the volunteers of South Portland Food Cupboard! 🥳

We gathered at Bayside Bowl for delicious food, bowling, ping pong, and plenty of good conversation. A huge thank you to Bayside Bowl for their generosity and for helping us give our volunteers the celebration they deserve! 🎳🍕

Our volunteers are the heart of SPFC.

Every part of our mission is driven by their commitment. Whether that’s waking up in the early morning hours to pick up food donations, welcoming recipients, providing support, stocking shelves, sorting donations, cleaning, keeping our operations running, and all of the other ways they share their time and talents.

In addition to celebrating our volunteers, we also took a moment to honor two very special legacies within our SPFC family.

We celebrated the life and lasting dedication of our friend, Richard “Dick” Horton, who passed away on April 28, 2026. Dick was a longtime volunteer, supporter, and friend of SPFC, and we presented his wife and fellow volunteer, Nancy, with a framed shirt commemorating his commitment to the organization. It will become part of a new legacy wall honoring volunteers who have made an enduring impact on our organization.

We also announced the dedication of our Sedgeley Recipient Check-In Area, recognizing Steve and Celine Sedgeley for their extraordinary commitment to SPFC. Steve helped shape our data systems, introduced PantrySoft, served as a dedicated Board Treasurer, and gave countless hours of his time and expertise. Together, Steve and Celine have given generously of their time, talent, and kindness. We were grateful to have them with us to celebrate.

What a wonderful afternoon!
