I think Dolly would have loved to know that many of the books she gave to children, children have passed on to Book Fairy for us to give to other children, free, again, at food pantries…because…

On Tuesday, we celebrated the volunteers of South Portland Food Cupboard! 🥳

We gathered at Bayside Bowl for delicious food, bowling, ping pong, and plenty of good conversation. A huge thank you to Bayside Bowl for their generosity and for helping us give our volunteers the celebration they deserve! 🎳🍕

Our volunteers are the heart of SPFC.

Every part of our mission is driven by their commitment. Whether that’s waking up in the early morning hours to pick up food donations, welcoming recipients, providing support, stocking shelves, sorting donations, cleaning, keeping our operations running, and all of the other ways they share their time and talents.

In addition to celebrating our volunteers, we also took a moment to honor two very special legacies within our SPFC family.

We celebrated the life and lasting dedication of our friend, Richard “Dick” Horton, who passed away on April 28, 2026. Dick was a longtime volunteer, supporter, and friend of SPFC, and we presented his wife and fellow volunteer, Nancy, with a framed shirt commemorating his commitment to the organization. It will become part of a new legacy wall honoring volunteers who have made an enduring impact on our organization.

We also announced the dedication of our Sedgeley Recipient Check-In Area, recognizing Steve and Celine Sedgeley for their extraordinary commitment to SPFC. Steve helped shape our data systems, introduced PantrySoft, served as a dedicated Board Treasurer, and gave countless hours of his time and expertise. Together, Steve and Celine have given generously of their time, talent, and kindness. We were grateful to have them with us to celebrate.

What a wonderful afternoon!

We have some very exciting news at South Portland Food Cupboard! 🥳 We are thrilled to welcome Margaret Barrasso and Ellie Gibbs as our newest employees.

But if you’ve visited us before, chances are these two already look familiar. Both Margaret and Ellie have been dedicated SPFC volunteers for years, and they’re often among the first friendly faces you meet when you walk through our doors!

Here’s a little bit more about them….

✨ Meet Margaret Barrasso, Volunteer + Technology Coordinator

Margaret has been volunteering at the Food Cupboard for five years before stepping into this role. She loves the volunteers, the recipients, and the wonderful energy that fills the Cupboard.

When she’s not at SPFC, Margaret enjoys spending time with her friends and family, visiting the dog park, going on Disney cruises, and volunteering with local community theaters. 🐶🏰🎭

✨ Meet Ellie Gibbs, Food Distribution Coordinator

Ellie has been part of the SPFC volunteer family for three years. Her favorite part of the Food Cupboard? All of the people! She loves our volunteers and recipients, believes deeply in our mission, and feels honored to be part of the work we do in our community.

Outside of SPFC, Ellie loves cooking, spending time with her family and friends, walking her dog, and decorating (and redecorating!) her home. 🐶🍳🏡

Please join us in giving Margaret and Ellie a very warm welcome to the SPFC staff! We’re incredibly lucky that two people who already care so deeply about our community are now bringing that same heart and dedication to their new roles.

🚨Calling all RUNNERS and WALKERS! 🏃‍♀️‍➡️

Our friends at St. Maximilian Kolbe Church and the Knights of Columbus are once again hosting the 16th Annual South Portland Food Cupboard 5K Run/Walk and Kids Fun Run on Saturday, August 29, 2026!

This annual event has raised thousands of dollars to help provide food for local families, and we're incredibly grateful for their continued support. Last year alone, the race raised $11,000, helping provide food for more than 400 families for an entire month.

🚨VOLUNTEER drivers + helpers wanted! 🚐

One of the most important volunteer roles at South Portland Food Cupboard happens long before our doors open to feed our community.

We're looking for food rescue drivers and helpers to collect fresh food donations from local grocery stores, partners, etc. and deliver them to the cupboard, where they'll be distributed to neighbors facing food insecurity.

As a food rescue DRIVER, you'll do just that - driving one of our vans to pick up donations from various local locations. As a food rescue HELPER, you'll ride along to assist with loading, unloading, etc.

After the tragedy this week in Biddeford, our hearts remain with the family and friends of Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero.

🚗 South Portland Food Cupboard Cars & Coffee + Pop-Up Food Drive! ☕

Join the South Portland Food Cupboard for our July Cars & Coffee fundraiser! Spend the morning enjoying incredible vehicles, connecting with fellow enthusiasts, and helping feed neighbors across Southern Maine.

Please note: This month's event has a slightly different location at the Maine Mall. We'll be behind JCPenney.

We're excited to welcome Giuseppe's Roasters, who will be on site serving fresh coffee all morning.

🚘 Show Car Registration

$10 per show car

Every dollar raised directly supports the South Portland Food Cupboard's mission of feeding neighbors in need. Just two show car registrations can help provide a month of food for one individual. Your support also helps us purchase fresh produce and keep our operations running so we can continue serving thousands of individuals and families throughout Cumberland and York counties.

🥫 This is a special pop-up food drive! Help make an even bigger impact by bringing a donation of nonperishable food items. Every donation helps stock our shelves and ensures our neighbors have access to nutritious food when they need it most.

Whether you're bringing a show car, stopping by for coffee, or dropping off a food donation, we'd love to see you there!

To help us continue hosting these events at the Maine Mall, we ask everyone to be respectful of the property, fellow attendees, and neighboring businesses.

The following will not be tolerated:
• Burnouts
• Donuts
• Sideshows
• Excessive revving
• Hooning or reckless driving
• Loud music

Any illegal or unsafe activity may be reported. The Maine Mall has generously allowed us to host this fundraiser, and we appreciate everyone's help in ensuring these events remain safe, welcoming, and successful.
