There is still time to support the launch of The Hutchins School Building Stewardship Fund! Our initial goal of raising $10,000 by June 30, which will set the foundation for this endeavor.

For the past 14 years, Mad Horse Theatre Company has made its home in the historic Hutchins School building in South Portland. During that time, the space has become more than a theatre. It has become a gathering place for artists, audiences, students, and community members throughout Southern Maine.

As stewards of this historic building, we believe our responsibility extends beyond producing theatre. We are also responsible for caring for and maintaining the physical space itself so it can continue serving the community for years to come.

This spring, Mad Horse is launching the Hutchins School Building Stewardship Fund, a dedicated fund created specifically to support building maintenance, repairs, accessibility improvements, and future preservation needs. Our goal now is to take a more sustainable and forward-looking approach by creating a dedicated reserve fund that can help support both current and future building needs as they arise.

As a small volunteer-run theatre company, creating a separate building stewardship fund will allow us to care responsibly for the Hutchins School while protecting the core operating budget that supports productions, artists, and programming.

When you support this campaign, you are helping preserve an important cultural home for South Portland and ensuring that this historic space remains active, welcoming, and artistically vibrant for years to come.

The Cherry Orchard by Anton Chekov, translated by Tom Stopped, directed by Company Member Stacey Koloski, running April 22 - May 23, 2027.

In The Cherry Orchard, Chekhov’s last full-length play in a new translation by master dramatist Tom Stoppard, an impoverished landowning family is unable to face the fact that their estate is about to be auctioned off. Lopakhin, a local merchant, presents numerous options to save it, including cutting down their prized cherry orchard. But the family is stricken with denial. The Cherry Orchard charts the precipitous descent of a wealthy family, and in the process creates a bold meditation on social change and bourgeois materialism.

Additional information about auditions will be announced this summer.

MAURITIUS by Theresa Rebeck, directed by Company Member Jake Cote, running February 18 - March 14, 2027.

Stamp collecting is far more risky than you think. After their mother’s death, two estranged half-sisters discover a book of rare stamps that may include the crown jewel for collectors. One sister tries to collect on the windfall, while the other resists for sentimental reasons. In this gripping tale, a seemingly simple sale becomes dangerous when three seedy, high-stakes collectors enter the sisters’ world, willing to do anything to claim the rare find as their own.

EUREKA DAY by Jonathan Spector, Directed by Company Member Joe Bearor, runs October 1-25, 2026

The Eureka Day School in Berkeley, California, is a bastion of progressive ideals: representation, acceptance, social justice. In weekly meetings Eureka Day’s five board members develop and update policy to preserve this culture of inclusivity, reaching decisions only by consensus. But when a mumps outbreak threatens the Eureka community, facts become subjective and every solution divisive, leaving the school’s leadership to confront the central question of our time: How do you build consensus when no one can agree on truth?

Auditions for select roles of EUREKA DAY will be held on Saturday, June 27 and Sunday, June 28 by appointment. Swipe through for more details. To schedule an audition, or for details on how to submit virtually, email [email protected].
