It’s our birthday! 129 years ago, on May 24th, 1897, the lighthouse lantern was lit for the first time. The first photo was taken in the fall of 1897. The original tower was painted with a red lead paint and a coating of metallic brown. Look closely to see the keeper, William A. Lane. The second photo is of William Dwyer, an engineer from New York who won the bid to construct the tower.
The breakwater that connects the lighthouse to the shore was not built until 1951

There was a beautiful full “flower” moon to start the month of May last night, although it’s not visible in this photo, it seemed to give the lighthouse a little extra magical glow.

We’ve been a little quiet on here this winter but that doesn’t mean we’re not busy behind the scenes! We’ve been making plans for another season, participating in the Portland History Docents program, gearing up for some essential fundraising, and ordering new stock for our gift shop. Lots to do but July will be here before we know it!

We hope you’re all staying safe & warm today in this blustery blizzard.

We’re participating in the excellent Portland History Docent program again this year! The program is a unique opportunity to learn about and visit several of greater Portland’s historic sites (including us) and then share your enthusiasm with the public by volunteering as a docent/tour guide. The Portland History Collaborative will host a program of 10 classes on local history, art, and architecture, as well as guiding techniques. Classes start February 26th. Head over to portlandhistorydocents.org to sign up now!
