It’s our birthday! 129 years ago, on May 24th, 1897, the lighthouse lantern was lit for the first time. The first photo was taken in the fall of 1897. The original tower was painted with a red lead paint and a coating of metallic brown. Look closely to see the keeper, William A. Lane. The second photo is of William Dwyer, an engineer from New York who won the bid to construct the tower.
The breakwater that connects the lighthouse to the shore was not built until 1951
