Today we honor Juneteenth, commemorating June 19, 1865, when enslaved Black Americans in Galveston, Texas were finally informed of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. This day, often called Freedom Day or America’s “second Independence Day,” calls us to remember the past, celebrate Black resilience, and continue the work of justice in our communities and beyond.

In the Sierra Nevada and across the nation, we recommit to building communities and conservation movements rooted in equity, inclusion, and liberation for all.

Happy Juneteenth. ✊🏾❤️💚

Seeing the American River watershed from above changes everything.

Earlier this month, we joined elected officials, agency leaders, water managers, conservation partners, and community voices for an aerial tour stretching from the Sierra headwaters to Folsom Lake. It offered a rare, landscape-scale view of one of California’s most important water sources.

From intact forests and roadless areas to active restoration projects, the flight highlighted how deeply connected our forests, rivers, recreation, and communities truly are. It also showed why protecting healthy headwaters is essential for clean water, wildfire resilience, and the future of this region.

These shared experiences spark better conversations, stronger partnerships, and smarter solutions for the challenges ahead.

Thank you to and and to everyone who joined us in the air and on the ground.

Join us in protecting the Sierra—host a cleanup this September.

The Great Sierra River Cleanup returns on September 19, and we are looking for local champions to host cleanup sites across the region. By signing up as a host, you will help remove trash from our rivers, lakes, and communities while bringing people together to care for the places we all love.

Can’t host on September 19? No problem. Any cleanup you organize during September can be counted as part of the Great Sierra River Cleanup effort.

Hosting is simple, impactful, and a great way to make a visible difference in your community.

Together, we will look at practical ways to foster more inclusive, affirming outdoor environments for q***r and trans communities and other underrepresented groups.

Whether you work in outdoor education, lead programs, or simply care about making the outdoors more accessible and welcoming, this webinar offers tools and perspectives you can put into practice right away.

California accidentally created a huge loophole that lets many “advanced manufacturing” projects skip environmental review near our homes, schools, and sensitive habitats. SB 954 fixes that mistake by restoring key protections for endangered species habitat, limiting which facilities qualify for the exemption, and keeping polluting projects away from neighborhoods and disadvantaged communities.

Tell your State Senator: Vote YES on SB 954 to protect clean air, public health, and wildlife—while still allowing truly climate-friendly manufacturing to move forward.

📝 Take action, then share this post to help close the loophole and keep toxic industry out of our communities.

The Roadless Rule has protected 58.5 million acres of wild national forests for nearly 25 years—but an amendment to the Wildfire Prevention Act (S.140) now threatens to roll those protections back.

Tell your senators: oppose attacks on the Roadless Rule and support the Roadless Area Conservation Act (RACA) to permanently protect these forests.
