Celebrating a Wonderful Partnership – HomShare Vermont and The Thompson Senior Center

The Thompson Senior Center in Woodstock launched its homesharing program in 2019 to
serve Woodstock and the surrounding towns. In 2023, The Thompson and HomeShare
Vermont partnered to expand that service to all of northern Windsor County. This
partnership has been the blueprint for HomeShare’s further expansion into the Northeast
Kingdom and all of southeastern Vermont.

A driving force behind this successful partnership is Shari Borzekowski, the Thompson’s
Aging at Home Resource Manager and HomeShare Vermont Case Manager. With a passion
for aging in place, Shari works to ensure older adults have the support and connections
they need to thrive.

When she's not working, Shari enjoys life in Killington with her husband and their dog. With
their two children now grown and (mostly!) out of the house, she's embracing a new
chapter while continuing to make a difference in the lives of others.
We're grateful for the experience, compassion and dedication Shari brings to creating
compatible homeshare matches and the communities she serves daily.

We’d like to welcome Christine and Blair to our HomeShare Board of Directors!

Christine has served as Executive Director of Brattleboro Housing Partnerships since 2020 and joined HomeShare’s Board after hearing about our partnership with the Windham & Windsor Housing Trust. “I look forward to supporting HomeShare in reaching more participants in Southern Vermont by sharing information with community members and helping my neighbors and community partners to understand what a wonderful, innovative program it is.”

Blair is a Financial Advisor at Sequoia Financial Group in Burlington and learned of HomeShare Vermont from several clients who had participated over the years. “As a native Vermonter from the Northeast Kingdom, I’ve seen firsthand how housing, isolation and financial pressure can affect individuals and families across our state. I’m hopeful I can contribute practical financial and organizational experience while helping expand awareness of HomeShare’s mission.”

We're honored to welcome Christine and Blair to the HomeShare Vermont Board of Directors, and look forward to the insight and passion they’ll bring to our mission.

Do all HomeShare guests provide services in exchange for rent?

Not necessarily! Every homeshare is unique.

💛 Some homeowners are looking for:
💙 Supplemental income
💛 Help with household tasks
💙 Transportation assistance
💛 Companionship and support

Some homeshare arrangements are rent-only, while others include an exchange of services for reduced rent. Common services exchanged for reduced rent can include:

💛 Housekeeping
💙 Meal preparation
💛 Yard work and snow shoveling
💙 Shopping and errands
💛 Pet care
💙 Transportation
💛 Companionship

The best arrangements are those that meet the needs of both the homeowner and the homesharer.

Not sure what arrangement makes sense for your situation? HomeShare Vermont case managers work with each participant to help create an agreement that's fair, realistic and beneficial for everyone involved.

Summer is a season for day trips, family visits, and enjoying everything Vermont has to offer. But for some homeowners, being away from home can bring added worries.

One of the benefits of homesharing is having another trusted person in the home. Whether it's collecting the mail, keeping an eye on things while you're away or simply being there day to day, homesharing can provide added peace of mind.

For many hosts, the benefits go beyond practical support. Homesharing can also offer companionship, connection and a greater sense of security throughout the year.

Summer Savings Tip: Take advantage of seasonal savings by reducing energy costs. Use fans instead of air conditioning when possible, close blinds during the hottest parts of the day, and unplug electronics when they're not in use. Small changes can add up to noticeable savings on your monthly utility bills.

Looking for an even bigger way to reduce costs? Homesharing can help. By sharing a home, you can lower housing expenses, split utility costs and enjoy the added benefits of companionship and mutual support. It's a practical, community-focused solution that helps make living in Vermont more affordable.
