I am Misty Atkinson, a Family Nurse Practitioner from Monticello, Kentucky, and
I am honored to be a candidate for Denim & Diamonds Queen in support of the American Cancer Society.
Like so many, cancer has touched my life in countless ways. As I was preparing to begin nursing school, I lost my grandfather to lung cancer. Throughout my career in healthcare, I have had the privilege of caring for many patients battling cancer. I have educated patients and families about their disease and treatments, administered medications, witnessed the incredible strength of survivors, and, unfortunately, shared in the heartbreak of losing far too many patients, friends and family members far too soon.
My connection to breast cancer is deeply personal. I have an aunt who is a 14-year breast cancer survivor, a cousin who has survived breast cancer twice, and another who is currently fighting her own battle. Then, last year, I faced my own breast cancer diagnosis.
Today, by the grace of God, I am a breast cancer survivor!
I know that my survivorship is first and foremost a blessing from God, and I am incredibly grateful for the amazing medical team who walked beside me throughout my journey. I also respect the vital role organizations like the American Cancer Society play in giving people hope and more opportunities to survive. Through research, education, patient support, and advocacy, the American Cancer Society works every day to make a difference in the lives of those facing cancer.
For me, this campaign is about so much more than wearing a crown. It is about honoring those I have lost, celebrating those who have survived, standing beside those who are still fighting, and helping create a future where more families have the opportunity to hear the words, “You are cancer-free.”
I am honored to use my voice and share my own journey in hopes to raise funds and awareness for a cause that is so close to my heart. Every donation represents hope. It supports research, provides resources for patients and families, and helps give people facing cancer a little more strength for the road ahead.
I have been on both sides of this fight—as a healthcare provider caring for patients and as a patient fighting for my own life. I know the fear, the uncertainty, the hope, and the gratitude that come with a cancer journey.
Now, I am blessed to turn my experience into purpose!
