Abraham Clay, 9, hands a backpack of gifts to Christopher Quinn Griego on Wednesday afternoon at the Supporting People in Need’s Seasonal Overnight Shelter, 610 N. Silver St. Abraham used his own money, assisted by a $100 donation from Los Victor’s Mexican Food, 901 N. Hudson, to purchase 45 backpacks that he filled with gifts for unhoused people in town including candy canes, socks, lotion and gloves. This is the third year that Abraham has packaged and distributed the gifts with the help of his grandmother, Terry Quinteros. Abraham said he wanted “peace, love and kindness” for Christmas.

Sandy puts it well. She and I have been led to use our cameras and photography experience to bring some pictures of what is happening in our community to take people off the streets and support them in gaining self-sufficiency. It focuses on programs operated under the auspices of the nonprofit organization S.P.I.N. (Supporting People In Need). We call it: "S.P.I.N. - Shelter and a Lot More." The exhibit is at the Silver City Public Library now and will stay through January. We'd love to see you at the opening reception this Friday afternoon (Dec. 12) from 3 to 5!

"I don't know if this story is real or not but it touched my heart. But I do know that some of these sad stories are real. We have seen it. We just hung our photo exhibit at the Silver City Public Library. We are trying to tell the story of SPIN (Serving People In Need) a local non-profit organization that provides shelter and so much more to the local homeless population. Our show will hang through the end of January. We have tried to tell the story of the homeless in Silver City through our photography. And what SPIN does to help those that need it most with food, shelter and so much more. We will be there this Friday from 3-5 for our opening reception. "Have Hope~ Choose Love~Be KInd" "SPIN" lives it!

Many shelter residents had never seen how vegetables were produced before working in the SPIN garden! The garden was created in 2023 to supply fresh produce for meals at the shelter... to learn more click the link below!!
