So many interesting facts with our historic downtown buildings!

There is a little bank on a courthouse square in west central Ohio that architecture students travel across the country to stand in front of 🏛️

Sidney is the seat of Shelby County, a town of around twenty thousand people, and on one corner of its square sits a small brick building designed by Louis Sullivan. Sullivan is the man usually credited with shaping the modern skyscraper and with mentoring Frank Lloyd Wright. Late in his career, after the big city commissions dried up, he designed a handful of small banks in Midwestern farm towns. People call them his jewel boxes.

The one in Sidney was finished around 1918. It is squat and solid and wrapped in tapestry brick in colors nobody builds with anymore, with an enormous arched window and terra cotta ornament crawling around the entrance. It was built to look like a vault and feel like a temple, because that is exactly what a farmer needed to believe about the place holding his money.

There is something very Ohio about the whole situation. One of the most important architects in American history left a masterpiece on a county square, and most people drive past it on the way to get coffee.
