This week Ms. Kasey took her Passport Travelers back in time to buried cities.

On Monday, they traveled back in time to Pompeii and Herculaneum, the cities buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Did you know Mount Vesuvius is actually a volcano within a volcano? They did a volcano science experiment and created their own mosaics. Pompeii had beautiful mosaics that were found as the city was unburied.

On Tuesday, Ms. Kasey took the older group to cities buried by sand and declined trade routes. First, they went to Petra and tried their hand at soap carving some of the beautiful buildings carved in stone. Then they went to Oxyrhynchus and learned how papyrus was made. They tried writing their name in Egyptian hieroglyphics.

Be on the lookout in the fall for our monthly Passport program!

Tuesday evening, the Coy Public Library of Shippensburg hosted Science Heroes "Digging It". The program was led by Simon Sarnowski. She travels central PA providing interactive science experiences. She holds a BFA from the University of Alabama at Birmington. She studied Musical Theater and now applies the skills she learned to her style of enthusiastic and dramatic presenting. When not being a Science Hero, she works as a children's librarian in York. She believes science is fun for everyone!

The program provided hands-on learning for approximately 50 children and adults. Many volunteers from the audience were chosen to assist. The children learned science concepts and vocabulary such as hypothesis, force, air pressure, and gravity.

A BIG thank you to Simon for creating such a fun and entertaining space for our community members and their families! Everyone had a wonderful time!

Saturday proved to be perfect weather for enjoying the Coy Public Library's annual Duck Derby. Community members of all ages bought numbered ducks in anticipation of the race commencing at 12:30. This year exactly 500 ducks were purchased which represented an increase of over 100 ducks purchased in 2025. These purchases generated $1955 before expenses and all proceeds will go directly to benefitting the library.

As the ducks were dumped into the creek and floated towards the finish line, cheers and encouragement were heard from the many enthusiastic spectators. The judges announced the winning ducks as they raced past the finish line.
The winners were as follows: 1st place was duck #316 bought by Marigold Morlack, 2nd place went to duck #460 bought by Grace Williamson, 3rd place was duck #263 bought by Randy Brenize, 4th place was duck #34 bought by Willow Papa, and 5th place was duck #464 bought by Chloe Papa. The cash prizes in descending order were $200, $100, $75, $50, and $25.

A HUGE shoutout to our local Scouts who collected each and every duck to ensure no ducks were left behind and that our creeks remain clean and liter free!

We would also like to thank Sean Cornell for cleaning and helping prepare the creek for the big race! We appreciate you!

Author Floyd Stokes returned to the library for his yearly visit, delighting children with stories, songs, and plenty of smiles! His enthusiasm and ability to connect with young readers make each visit a special and memorable experience.

For over 26 years, Floyd has traveled to libraries sharing his love of reading and inspiring children to learn, dream, and grow. His commitment to literacy and dedication to enriching the lives of young people is truly extraordinary. We are honored to welcome him back each year and thankful for the lasting impact he has on the children in our community!
