The Transformation in the Classroom 

"Participating in the Learning Foundation training has brought so much impact to our school, such as lesson planning before teaching, high student participation in the classroom, and high performance of students in their exit exams.

There have been a series of changes in my school. Teachers are teaching effectively, preparing their lesson notes, and making use of them. Even the students are participating well. So that is the reason why I'm proud of being in this school."

One Teacher, Three Classrooms

"Some of the challenges my teachers face are that they are not paid by the government. The majority are volunteers. Another challenge is the distance they have to cover from their homes to the school. They also have low motivation.

They come to school when they feel like and go when they feel like because they have to find other means to survive. This affects learning because sometimes one teacher has to teach three classes, just to see that education continues."

Loving the Work Beyond the Struggle 

"I spend a lot of time in school. When I get home, I have to do my work, so there is not enough time for me to do anything. Despite all the challenges, I love to teach and I like the job as a teacher. I am always happy when coming to school to teach my pupils.

Despite all the challenges, I still come to school because I am a teacher. I want to teach and have an impact. I still come to the classroom because the children come to school. That is why we are appealing for better conditions of service."

Feeding Students from Her Own Pocket

"Some of the sacrifices that I make in school as a teacher are that some of the children do not have lunch, so I have to go the extra mile to give them lunch. Some of the materials are also not enough for teaching, so I have to go the extra mile to get the materials I need for teaching.

One of the biggest challenges we face as teachers in the community is that there is no light, no good facilities, no good drinking water, and the materials are not enough for teaching. Teaching in a last-mile community is very difficult because there are not enough materials for teaching. My salary is not enough to take care of my sons because I have to buy school uniforms, bags, shoes, books, and provide lunch. Despite being a teacher, I am also a parent."

A Mother's Double Shift

"My name is Mariatu Emmanuela Conteh. I am a teacher at S.D.A Primary School, Makali. I am in charge of Class Three, and I teach all the subjects. A typical day as a teacher, when I wake up, I take my bath, make breakfast for my family, and prepare to go to school. At school, I do my morning devotion and prepare to teach.

I teach until 2:30. Then, when I return home, I prepare dinner and do my lesson notes for the next day. Some of the challenges I face as a teacher in my community are that there are not enough materials for teaching. I go the extra mile to get the materials I use to teach, such as teaching aids, Vanguard and other flashcards, so that I can teach the children."

Cut Off in the Last Mile

"Teaching in a last-mile community is very difficult. There is no network, no health centre facility and no electricity. When you want to send or receive information or know what is happening in the world, without phone network, you cannot know what is going on. If someone is sick in the community, the people or the community have to contribute to help that person.

Even in the education sector, for teachers and pupils, the distance is not easy. With all these sufferings, the salary is not enough, although I am a PIN-coded teacher. What about those teachers who do not have PIN codes? It is not really easy. I cannot even take care of my family. I want to tell people around the world that teachers are very important. They must be respected and supported in order to do their work."

Going the Extra Mile

"Before I go home, I make sure that the knowledge I am passing or impacting to the children is gained by each and every one of them during the day. Some of the sacrifices that I made to support education in my community include finding a way to go the extra mile to get school or teaching materials to impact knowledge to the pupils.

I spend my time for the rest of the day in school, so I cannot do any other business. There is no other business that I do in any other area unless I go to school and deliver the message to the pupils."
