We just finished up our last Summer Artivism Workshop! The youth had an incredible time learning from Erinn Kathryn and Taha Ebrahimi!

During this 5-day workshop, students worked alongside artist Erinn Kathryn to learn the step-by-step process of making and casting molds. Molds were taken from the bark of century old Italian Oak trees that line a neighboring street and cast using handmade paper pulp. To supplement this experience and connect youth more deeply to our neighborhood trees, students embarked on a nature walk with Taha Ebrahimi where she used trees as guides to learn about the history of Georgetown, and the ecological, cultural, and historical significance of our neighboring trees.

This program is made possible through the generous support from the Office of Sustainability and Environment Environmental Justice Fund ().

We are closed for exhibition turnover. Up next is 𝙄 𝘾𝙖𝙣 𝙎𝙚𝙚 𝙄𝙩 𝙁𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙃𝙚𝙧𝙚, a solo exhibition by Hank Reavis (hankreavis).

Join us September 5th for the opening reception of 𝙄 𝘾𝙖𝙣 𝙎𝙚𝙚 𝙄𝙩 𝙁𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙃𝙚𝙧𝙚 in tandem with the opening reception of 𝘾𝙖𝙢𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙨 at the Georgetown Steamplant. 𝘾𝙖𝙢𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙨 is a group exhibition curated by Hank Reavis, and Bergen Hendrickson. Visitors are encouraged to move between both venues, experiencing the works as a continuous exhibition across sites.

Take a look at what the youth created during our Books & Flowers Artivism Workshop! In this 5-day series, youth learned the process of bookbinding, native plant identification, and so much more!

Local artist and educator, Naomi Kasumi led a bookbinding workshop where the students created their very own 40 page, softcover journals to use in the following days. They took their new journals out into nature where Maxx Follis-Goodkind introduced plant identification and illustration. They then spent the day with Amaranta Sandys learning the historical and cultural significance of the Marigold flower through illustrations and watercolor. Naturalist Nicolasa Hernandez from the City of Seattle also joined us during Amaranta’s lesson. She helped the students study marigold seeds and flowers under a microscope, discuss how flowers communicate with insects through their scents and patterns, and even sample some marigold tea! On the last day, Leah Mann taught two traditional Japanese art forms: Tatakizome (hammered dye) which transfers the pigment of leaves and flowers to paper or cloth with hammering process; and Chigiri-e (torn paper collage) with dried flowers to create works alongside an introduction into somatic breath work.

Developed over many years from an encyclopedic range of sources, the film unfolds through a series of ritualistic transformations, surreal tableaux, and symbolic operations, moving fluidly between the sacred and the absurd, the comic and the cosmic. At once playful and profoundly esoteric, HEAVEN & EARTH MAGIC discards narrative coherence in favor of an associative, initiatory experience — one that invites viewers not to decode its symbols, but to move through them. Acclaimed cellist, composer Goldston—who toured with Nirvana, appears on their MTV Unplugged album, and has collaborated with David Byrne, Earth, Lynn Shelton, and many more—joins forces with musician/ film composer Brewer, (Blutbraüer, ManDate, Old Dark House) whose score for The Shining Forwards and Backwards helped launch Portland Art Museums Tomorrow Theater in 2023.

That’s a wrap on our first Artivism of the Summer, Indigo Spell! Thank you Sulai Lopez Sulai Lopez for an incredible workshop. A special thanks to Seattle Office of Sustainability & Environment Environmental Justice Fund for making these opportunities for youth possible. Seattle Office of Sustainability & Environment.

During this four day workshop, youth learned the historical and cultural significance of indigo dying, knowledge and experience working with many naturally derived dyes with a focus on indigo, and participated in Sulai’s ongoing environmental activism project! In this 4-day program, students were asked to create an indigo dyed flag with an affirmation for how they want to see change in the world. Sulai adds these to their collection of community flags. The students created thoughtful works of art influenced by the long traditions of indigo dying and engaged in thoughtful conversations around community value and the everpressing questions regarding how to be the change they want to see in the world.

The Marine Iguana is a 30-minute performance that uses the adaptive and maladaptive traits of the marine iguana as a lens to explore misfit bodies, social behavior, and persistent friendly ghosts. Writer and performer Leah Crosby uses their body, digital and analogue image-making tools, and experimental audio storytelling to ask audiences to come imagine with them, a world where they call all the shots.
