The Man God Called After His Own Heart – Part 28 | “A Heart That Seeks God’s Direction” 👑

In Part 28 of The Man God Called After His Own Heart, Apostle Ebenezer Ackun examines one of the defining qualities of David’s relationship with God: David consistently sought the Lord’s direction before making important decisions.

Although David was a skilled warrior, an experienced leader, and an anointed king, he did not rely solely on his own understanding. He recognized that victory did not come merely through strength, strategy, or past experience. David understood that every situation required fresh guidance from God.

In 1 Samuel 23, David heard that the Philistines were attacking Keilah. Before responding, he inquired of the Lord. Even when the men around him were afraid, David returned to God and asked again for confirmation. Later, when David learned that Saul was planning to trap him in the city, he once more sought the Lord and received the direction that enabled him to escape.

In 1 Samuel 30, after suffering devastating loss at Ziklag, David did not allow grief or pressure to push him into acting impulsively. He asked God whether he should pursue the enemy, and the Lord assured him that he would recover everything.

David displayed the same dependence upon God after becoming king. When the Philistines came against him, he inquired of the Lord before going into battle. God gave him one strategy for the first battle and a completely different strategy for the next. David’s willingness to listen and obey showed that he did not assume yesterday’s instruction was automatically God’s direction for today.

📖 Scripture Focus

* 1 Samuel 30:8 — David asks whether he should pursue the enemy, and God promises recovery.
* 2 Samuel 5:17–25 — David seeks the Lord before battling the Philistines and obeys God’s specific instructions.

* Jeremiah 10:23 — Humanity does not possess the wisdom to direct its own steps independently of God.
* Psalm 37:23–24 — The steps of a righteous person are ordered by the Lord.
* Philippians 4:6 — In every situation, believers are called to bring their requests before God through prayer.

💎 Key Message

A heart after God does not merely ask God to bless decisions that have already been made. It first asks:

“Lord, what would You have me do?”

David’s dependence upon God was not weakness—it was wisdom. He understood that his own knowledge was limited, but God could see every danger, every opportunity, and every outcome.

There are moments when circumstances appear familiar, yet God may give a different instruction than He gave before. This is why we must not live only by past experiences. We need a present relationship with God and a heart that remains sensitive to His voice.

⚡ A Heart That Seeks God’s Direction

David teaches us to seek God:

* Before acting.
* Before entering battles.
* When facing opposition.
* When experiencing loss.
* When others are afraid.
* When the next step is unclear.
* Even when we believe we already know what to do.

A person who acknowledges God in all their ways demonstrates trust, humility, and dependence upon Him.

🙏 Reflection

Do you seek God’s direction before making decisions, or only call upon Him after problems arise?

Are you willing to wait for His answer, even when pressure is demanding an immediate response?

Do you trust God enough to follow His instructions when they differ from your own plans?

May we develop a heart like David’s—a heart that does not lean upon its own understanding, but continually seeks the wisdom, counsel, and direction of the Lord.

“In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.” — Proverbs 3:6
