On indigenious people's day, remembering the work of Tsianina Redfeather Blackstone, also known as Princess Tsianina Redfeather, was a Muscogee mezzo-soprano opera singer, performer, and Native American activist. She co-created the opera Shanewis, which debuted at the Metropolitan Opera in 1918. She entertained troops in WWI, co-founded the American Indian Education Foundation, and advocated for Indigenous rights and cultural preservation, becoming a trailblazer for Native American representation in the arts.

We are delighted to welcome back mezzo‑soprano Mariia Bykova for another season with Puget Sound Concert Opera! Last year, Mariia proved herself to be an artist of remarkable poise and adaptability — especially when her cover assignment for Parasha's Neighbor (Mavra) turned into actually performing the role. She stepped in and rose beautifully to the challenge. You can hear Mariia singing scenes from Faust and Nabucco next Friday, October 2 at 7pm in our Season Preview at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Bellevue.

Cassidy Cheong joins PSCO’s Studio Artists! See her perform scenes from Faust and Heart Mountain on Oct 2 — free performance, no tickets. Fresh from the Rising Waters Collective Showcase and her role as Flora in The Turn of the Screw. This season, she will cover Siebel (Faust) and Mature Kara (Heart Mountain). Cassidy is currently earning her Master of Music in Vocal Performance at the University of Washington, studying with Dr. Carrie Shaw. She’s a 2024–2025 Tacoma Opera Young Artist and a proud Swarthmore College grad, where she completed her BA in Music and Political Science with honors and received multiple awards for musical excellence. She loves singing early music, contemporary works, and anything that stretches her artistry. Recent performances include Suor Angelica (Queens Summer Vocal Institute), Les arts florissants (UW), Sweets by Kate (Lowbrow Opera Collective) and Vivaldi’s Gloria (Magnolia Chorale). She also performs regularly with the UW Baroque and Modern Music Ensembles.

Celebrating the African Roots of Russian Literature’s Brightest Voice. Alexander Pushkin — often called the founder of modern Russian literature — carried an extraordinary family history. His great‑grandfather, Abram Petrovich Gannibal, was an African child captured by the Ottomans and brought to Russia, where he was given to the court of Peter the Great. Peter not only freed him but became his godfather, ensured his education, and launched him into a distinguished military and engineering career. Gannibal rose to the ranks of Russian nobility, and generations later his great‑grandson reshaped an entire nation’s literary voice.

It’s a remarkable lineage — a story that underscores how profoundly immigrants and people of color have shaped culture, innovation, and the arts.

Both Aleko and Mavra, the two Russian one‑acts in our June program, are based on Pushkin’s work. Experiencing these operas is witnessing the fusion of literary brilliance with musical genius.

We are excited for the grand finale of our season dedicated to the work of composers who immigrated to the US. Tomorrow and Sunday, we feature Rachmaninoff's Aleko and Stravinsky's Aleko. Thanks to generous donors and a grant from 4Culture, TICKETS ARE PAY WHAT YOU WISH! Friday, June 19 at 7pm - Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Bellevue and Sunday at 3pm - Broadway Performance Hall on Capitol Hill.
