We were thrilled to connect with local grantees and mission-aligned partners for an afternoon of networking, updates, and learning at our Biennial Event. It was a special opportunity to celebrate vibrant partnerships, meaningful progress, and collaboration across our 11-county service area—and to recognize the individuals and organizations making it all happen.

Local health care advocate and Executive Director of Volunteers in Medicine, Kelly Ranieli, was honored with the Douglas G. Allen Leadership Award; and Alex Briscoe, Principal of Public Works Alliance, inspired us to reimagine how we support and integrate social and emotional health within our communities. His keynote and post-luncheon workshop were engaging, relevant, and thought-provoking!

We were also excited to formally recognize the members of our Mental Health Learning Community Cohort. Their unique contributions to community-based systems change are certainly worth celebrating!

Thank you Johnson College for welcoming the Moses Taylor Foundation team for a site visit this week. Johnson College and Moses Taylor Foundation have partnered on several projects over the past nine years, expanding and strengthening the College’s health care workforce programs, including the Certified Medical Assistant program in Scranton and Hazleton and the Biomedical Equipment Technology program. Together, these investments reflect a sustained partnership focused on building a skilled regional health care workforce and ensuring students have the hands-on training and resources necessary to meet the needs of Northeastern Pennsylvania’s health care sector.

We know many of our nonprofit partners and those they serve will be affected by the Medicaid changes coming in January 2027. We recommend checking out the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services' newly launched Medicaid Changes Communications Toolkit, which contains shareable and customizable content to help spread the word about these upcoming changes. The Toolkit, which will be updated regularly, includes resources like flyers, social media posts, newsletter content, and more.

This week the Moses Taylor Foundation Team took part in United Way of Lackawanna, Wayne & Pike Day of Caring. Our assignment was cleaning, sanding, and re-finishing picnic tables at Safari Farm Petting Zoo & Sanctuary. We managed to fit in some visits with the animals as well!

A visit to the local barbershop, salon, or tattoo shop isn’t always just about aesthetics. Clients tend to open up while in the chair of a trusted service professional, chatting about family, work, relationships—and sometimes more sensitive topics like money issues, stress, or mental health needs.

Community Care Behavioral Health (CCBH)—a nonprofit behavioral health organization— recognized the unique role Black barbers, stylists, tattoo artists, and cosmetologists play within their communities and launched the Our Health Access Initiative for Recovery (Our HAIR) program. Our HAIR equips trained Wellness Ambassadors to share information about substance use, anxiety, depression, and su***de prevention in comfortable spaces where relationships have already been built.

Last fall, CCBH partnered with the Foundation to bring Our HAIR into Luzerne, Lackawanna, and Monroe counties. To date, 22 Wellness Ambassadors are active within eight NEPA neighborhoods, and the next cohort will begin training in September.

Our most recent Grantee Spotlight explores the importance of this program and highlights two dynamic Wellness Ambassadors—Jerome and Pat—who are active in our local community.

School nurses do so much more than care for students when they're sick.

In the August issue of Happenings Magazine, Megan Margavage from Lake-Lehman SD shares a bit of her own story and personal motivation "to build relationships that help students feel confident, healthy, and ready to succeed—not only in school, but throughout life."

Like so many school nurses in our region, Megan is a powerful force for good, bringing her compassion, expertise, and dedication to students each day.
