We here at Q***r NEPA want to call some attention and support to a member of our community and long time supporter, Frank Carey. Frank has been a central part of our flag-raising in Scranton for a few years now, and we are continually grateful for him lending his presence and voice to us. Outside of our personal gratitude for Frank's efforts in Q***r NEPA, he is known as an advocate for the arts and a supporter of local nonprofits and theatres in Northeastern PA. His drag persona, Lady Lydia, has brought continued joy to our community through performances on stage and at a variety of local events.

Unfortunately, it seems like photos from Frank's involvement in our flag raising have been circulating in some exceptionally unsupportive circles. Let us be clear that targeting a member of our community solely based on the fact that they choose to express themselves differently than you is horrible and beyond unacceptable. Publicly distributing content about a member of the LGBTQ+ community that they have not consented to is not only a violation of privacy but is a violation of safety as well. Hate and prejudice have no home here, so we are calling on those around us to exhibit the kind of support we know and love from our NEPA neighbors.

Happy Belated Birthday August 24 commemorates the birthday of the late Marsha P. Johnson, a beloved LGBTQ+ rights activist who played a pivotal role in the Stonewall rebellion of 1969. During that tumultuous first night of protests at the Stonewall Inn, Johnson courageously reportedly threw “the shot glass heard around the world” into the bar’s mirror, exclaiming, “I got my civil rights!” While some accounts may be debated, Johnson’s significant contribution to the vibrant, resilient LGBTQ+ rights movement that emerged from Stonewall remains undeniable and deeply inspiring.

Today we celebrate International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples to honor indigenous cultures, rights, and contributions globally. International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples is celebrated on August 9th to commemorate the first meeting of the United Nations Working group on Indigenous Populations of the Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights held in 1982.

Indigenous Peoples live in all regions of the world and make up 5% of the global population. With a population of at least 370-500 million, Indigenous Peoples represent the greater part of the world’s cultural diversity and represent 5,000 different cultures speaking the majority of the world’s 7,000 languages. Despite their cultural differences, Indigenous Peoples from around the world share common problems related to the protection of their human rights as distinct peoples. Many Indigenous Peoples continue to be confronted with marginalization, extreme poverty, and other human rights violations.

Today serves to honor their cultures and contributions to the world as well as a call to action to protect Indigenous Peoples globally.

Transgender History Month is a time to honor and reflect on the significant contributions, courageous civil rights milestones, and resilient presence of transgender people throughout history. Celebrated each August, this month was first officially recognized in San Francisco in 2021 and has since grown to a statewide observance in California by 2023.

Origins and Key Milestones

- August 1966: Commemorates the brave Compton's Cafeteria Riot in San Francisco, one of the earliest acts of collective LGBTQ+ resistance that paved the way for greater understanding and acceptance.

- August 24, 2021: San Francisco Mayor London Breed proudly declared the month, in response to heartfelt advocacy efforts by Jupiter Peraza and The Transgender District, honoring the resilience of the transgender community.

- 2023–2024: California became the first U.S. state to officially honor August as Transgender History Month, acknowledging the ongoing struggles and celebrating the triumphs of transgender individuals.

Looking for a way to help out your favorite non-profit and get some cool swag at the same time? Q***r NEPA is announcing we will be holding our own online pop-up shop!

From June 26th to July 17th, you can order swag to show your Q***r NEPA Pride while helping us raise some funds for our all-year programming. Orders will process once the shop closes, and you can request it be shipped to you or pick up at Kevin's World Wide in Scranton after Friday, August 7th.
