Nationally acclaimed artist Jaclyn Wright comes to Western Spirit Museum for her first museum exhibition.

Created through years of fieldwork in Utah’s West Desert, High Visibility (Blaze Orange) uses debris gathered from public lands to explore the relationship between people and the land—and the traces we leave behind.

With phenomenal color contrast, Arizona artist Jessie Benton Evans captures a woman posed in an ensemble reflecting the Spanish folk costume style popular during the early 20th century.

The subject’s relaxed pose and subtle expression is complemented by the artist’s incorporation of rich green and yellow shades. The textures of the dress are intensified by her use of loose brushstrokes, done in a painterly style.

The legacy of notable contemporary jewelers Charles Loloma (1921-1991) and Preston Monongye (1927-1987) transformed the Indigenous jewelry space during the late 20th century. Their influence launched a generation of contemporary Indigenous artists into an era that embraced innovation and change.

In 2001, Jesse Monongya, the son of Preston Monongye, honored the artists’ legacy with a bolo tie designed for a fundraiser in support of renovating the closed Phoenix Indian School (now the Phoenix Indian School Visitor Center). The piece showcases Monongya’s masterful inlay technique, complete with bear paw bolo tips that represent both Charles Loloma and Preston Monongye.

A troubled production with multiple directors, Tombstone came and left cinemas in 1993 with relatively little fanfare, only to be later championed by devoted fans who rediscovered it on cable TV and VHS. The most influential aspect of the movie is surely Val Kilmer’s iconic performance as Doc Holliday, which fundamentally reshaped how the character is portrayed in popular culture.

Tombstone screens this Sunday, October 4 at 2PM. Film historian Michael F. Blake will be on hand to introduce the movie and lead a post-film discussion with the audience.

This screening is part of our 1990s film series, showcasing significant Westerns from that decade, held in conjunction with our blockbuster exhibition Still in the Saddle: A New History of the Hollywood Western, on view through the end of 2026.

Born in Jerome, Arizona, Lew Davis fostered an interest in art since childhood. As a teenager, he left Arizona for New York to eventually pursue training at the National Academy of Design. Davis’s work often depicted blue collar scenes, inspired by his observations in the Southwest during the Great Depression and subsequent New Deal programs.

Although a notable shift from his early figure work in the regionalist style, Davis remained true to his Southwestern roots by capturing the essence of a nighttime desert.
