When Knowledge becomes Dance!
कनककुण्डललोललोलचूलस-
स्मिततराननसोमशीतधृतिम् ।
सिततन्तुं दुधतीं करपुस्तकीं
सुमतिदां प्रणमामि हि शारदाम् ॥
Kanaka-kuṇḍala…
Sumatidāṁ praṇamāmi hi Śāradām.
🙏 “I bow to Śāradā, the giver of wisdom.”
This beautiful verse invokes Goddess Saraswati (Śāradā), the embodiment of knowledge, wisdom, learning and the arts. She is described with her serene, moon-like countenance, holding the book of knowledge, symbolizing learning and the pursuit of wisdom.
For a Kathak student, learning does not happen through the feet alone.
The feet learn rhythm through tatkaar.
The hands learn expression through mudras.
The eyes and face learn storytelling through abhinaya.
The mind learns tala, laya and composition.
And the heart learns bhava and devotion.
This is why Saraswati is such a meaningful presence in the journey of a performing artist.
