National Association of Neonatal Nurses (NANN)

National Association of Neonatal Nurses (NANN) You’re on the front line, providing around-the-clock care for these most vulnerable patients.

NANN is an inclusive, diverse community of neonatal nurses, nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists and other neonatal care professionals at all stages of their careers who care for newborn infants born with a variety of health challenges. The National Association of Neonatal Nurses (NANN) is committed to developing and delivering the resources in nursing and connections you need to advanc

e your career and evolve the profession. Today, more than ever before, high-risk neonates have a better chance of thriving because of advances in medicine and the dedicated care they receive from neonatal nurses like you. Your professional association for nursing, the National Association of Neonatal Nurses (NANN), stands behind you, offering support, neonatal nurse education, and nursing professional development—everything you need to thrive personally and professionally. We are an inclusive, diverse community made up of neonatal professionals at all stages of their careers, from nurses considering NICU nursing positions to neonatal APRNs. Our members advance the care of newborn babies born with a variety of health challenges, including prematurity, birth defects, infection, cardiac malformations, and surgical problems—whether they’re at the bedside, teaching, or doing research. For more than 30 years, NANN has supported you and advanced the profession by providing opportunities for members to
- influence care for neonates and their families
- collaborate with leaders and peers in their field
- gain knowledge to improve their daily practice. Neonatal nurses have called NANN “home” since 1984, and in 2007, NANN founded the National Association of Neonatal Nurses - Advanced Practice. NANN-AP is the unified voice of neonatal advanced practice registered nurses and offers benefits specific to neonatal APRNs.

Equitable communication in the NICU means every family, regardless of language, can fully understand and participate in their baby's care.

NANN's latest "From the Hill to the NICU" update looks at what the law requires and how neonatal nurses can lead on this at the bedside, from documenting language preference at admission to advocating for qualified interpreters at every major conversation.

Registration for the 2026 NANN Annual Conference is open, and there are three ways to experience it this year.

Go in person for the full conference experience: live sessions, hands-on learning, and direct connection with fellow neonatal professionals.

Bonus! Add the Advanced Practice Summit and you get advanced clinical dialogue face-to-face too!

Or choose on-demand and set your own pace. You still attend the Advanced Practice Summit in person, but the rest of the conference content is yours to revisit whenever it works for your schedule.

Both paths lead to the same depth of education. It just depends on how you like to learn.

Updated Position Statement: The Effect of Staff Nurses' Shift Work and Fatigue on Patient Safety and Nurses' Health

NANN's newly revised position statement on shift work and fatigue is out. It lays out clear recommendations for both employers and bedside nurses, from evidence-based scheduling and fatigue risk management systems to sleep strategies and drowsy-driving prevention. First published in 2015 and updated this year by the NANN Board of Directors, the statement reflects NANN's ongoing commitment to the nurses caring for the smallest, most fragile patients in the healthcare system.

Human milk isn't just nutrition for NICU babies, it's medicine. NANN's position statement highlights the evidence: exclusive human milk feeding can lower NEC risk by two-thirds, reduce infant mortality by up to 22%, and support stronger brain development in the most vulnerable newborns.
