Sierra Club Sonoma Group We're here to protect Sonoma County's most valued public interests: our air, water, and habitats. We We invite you to join us.

We're here to protect Sonoma County's most valued of public interests: our air, our water, and our habitats. In this, our purpose is distinct from that of elected officials, who must please all of the community's “stakeholders”, including those who would eagerly damage our watersheds, forests and habitat in the name of the bottom line. Our job is not to congratulate open-mindedness in government, but to make very clear to our neighbors which policies will protect, and which will harm our true public interests: our air, our water, and our habitats. We cringe when we hear environmental protection referred to as a “special interest”, and endorse the candidates who prioritize and value our true public interests. Our views are based on science, research, and the experience of hundreds of Sierra Club activists going back several generations. We also take the time to put on our boots and backpacks, and get first-hand value from Sonoma County's beautiful outdoor places. Together we can explore, enjoy and protect our Sonoma County habitat.

Read Conservation leader Teri Shore's letter to protect our roadless open space areas--with link to a place to make comments in favor of the Roadless Rule!!!

Letters to the editor | Sept. 20, 2026, Times-Standard

It’s time to speak up for roadless protections

More than 400 endangered or threatened animals and plants across our country will be pushed closer to extinction if the Roadless Rule that has kept bulldozers and logging roads out of wild lands and open spaces for decades is reversed. Creatures such as spotted owls, mysterious Humboldt martens, rare Pt. Arena mountain beavers and struggling Coho salmon rely on these unroaded forests and wild rivers to survive. The roadless areas also provide places to hike, birdwatch, fish and hunt — as well as clean water and air to all of us.
For 25 years, roadless publicly owned lands have remained safe from clear-cutting, roadbuilding, mining, and oil-and-gas drilling. Now we must stop extractive industries from forcing their way back in.
About half of California’s 4 million acres of roadless areas are found in Northern California. In Mendocino National Forest, nearly 30,00 acres of roadless lands border the Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument. Another 154,332 acres surround the remote Yuki, Yolla Bolly and Sanhedrin wilderness areas that serve as critical wildlife corridors.
Further North, more than 1 million acres of roadless habitat around Mt. Shasta and into the Trinity Alps allow bears, mountain lions, deer and other wildlife to thrive. The Klamath and Six Rivers National Forests hold tracts of redwoods and old growth along with free running rivers adding roughly another 1 million acres of roadless land.
Speak up for continued roadless protection by sending a letter to the US Forest Service before the Oct. 6 Roadless Rule comment deadline. See https://www.regulations.gov/document/FS-2025-0001-223869

More than 400 endangered or threatened animals and plants will be pushed closer to extinction across our country if the Roadless Rule that has kept bulldozers and logging roads out of wild lands and open spaces for decades is reversed by the current administration. Now is the time to show your support for the Roadless Rule by sending a comment here https://act.sierraclub.org/actions/National?actionId=AR0603784&id=701Po00001ROAMNIA5&utm_medium=web&utm_source=Bitly&utm_campaign=ourwildamerica&utm_content=roadlessdeisand watching the video below. https://www.instagram.com/reel/DdEuIcMCJHx/

Nearly 45 million acres of America's national forests are at risk of being opened up to roads, logging, and destruction. Once they're gone, we can't get these untouched forests back. Add your voice now to keep the heart of our public lands pristine for gen

Happy 110th birthday to the National Park Service! 🎉 For more than a century, the National Park Service has protected extraordinary places and helped people create memories that last a lifetime.

Now, while the parks we love are under immense threat from bulldozers, staffing and funding cuts, and the erasure of history, we're even more grateful for the park rangers, educators, scientists, and other workers who take care of these public lands for all of us.

This week, let's celebrate all they make possible and recommit to solidarity for our parks and the people who steward them: sc.org/SavePublicLands
