Active since 1987, the Sonoma County Mayors' Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities produced the Barrier Awareness Day, an interactive event that dramatizes the obstacles faced by people with disabilities. Behind the scenes, the organization builds relationships with employers to identify and eliminate barriers to equal opportunity in the workplace. The Barrier Buster Award is presented for achievement in raising public awareness of disability issues in Sonoma County.

31 Years ago today, the Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law prohibiting discrimination based on disability. We have made tremendous progress over the past 31 years thanks to the fearless leaders and activists who have fought for this community and its future. Which is why today we celebrate and recognize those leaders and our progress, and feel confident and hopeful for a more inclusive future. Let's continue to make change together!

Happy National Disability Independence Day 👏
