30 years of remembrance, art, and community 🌼💀

Our 30th annual Día de los Mu***os exhibition is on view now through November 29 in the museum’s historic Post Office building.

Presented every year since 1996, this exhibition has become a local touchstone, and this year we’re honoring that legacy by featuring past participants and the founders of Sonoma County’s Día de los Mu***os celebrations.

Inside, explore a towering 7-level altar by Liz Camino-Byers filled with decades of Mexican folk art, Jesus Bravo’s altar honoring the ancient Mexica harvest roots of the holiday, a hand-stitched Catrina dress sculpture by Maria de los Angeles, Nathan Gomez’s paintings inspired by Frida Kahlo and La Catrina, and a 15-foot winged papier-mâché heart by Life on Art.

Plus work by Cristina Briano, Ruben Guzman, Daniela Hernandez, and more.

Join us on November 1 at 2:00pm for Día de los Mu***os: Meet the Artists & Altaristas, an artists' talk and panel that provides a special opportunity to connect with the local artists and altaristas featured in the exhibition.

Come celebrate the cycle of life and the loved ones we carry with us. On view through November 29.

“Amor Eterno. Because if there’s one thing about death, it’s that the love never dies.” 🕯️🌼

Meet Daniela M. Hernandez, a third-generation Sonoma County realtor whose passion, and therapy, has become building altars. Her ofrenda in our Día de los Mu***os exhibition honors her own family and friends, along with the loved ones of the people closest to her. Look closely and you’ll find the little things they loved, a cold Coca-Cola among them, waiting for them when they come to visit.

As Daniela reminds us, Día de los Mu***os isn’t about celebrating death. It’s about celebrating life, and remembering that our stories don’t end when we’re gone. 💛

For 30 years, the Museum of Sonoma County has been honored to help our community keep these traditions alive, and to recognize how deeply rooted Latino culture is in this place we all call home. Thank you, Daniela, for sharing your heart with us.
