Orange County Ninety-Nines A dynamic group of Women Pilots based in and around John Wayne Airport, Orange County, California

06/04/2026

We honor and remember Shirley McFall, a beloved member of The Ninety-Nines for more than 35 years. ✈️❤️

Since joining our chapter in 1990, Shirley was a constant presence, mentor, volunteer, cheerleader, ground instructor, writer, and friend. She dedicated countless hours to encouraging new pilots, documenting our chapter’s accomplishments, and helping lead countless events and educational programs within the Ninety-Nines.

Known for her quick wit, infectious laugh, unwavering loyalty, and love of flying, Shirley left an impact on everyone fortunate enough to know her. Whether she was serving on committees, teaching, mentoring, organizing, or simply showing up to support her fellow Ninety-Nines, Shirley embodied the spirit of friendship, service, and adventure that defines our organization.

The skies are a little quieter without her, but her legacy will continue to inspire generations of women aviators.

Blue skies and tailwinds, Shirley. Thank you for all you gave to our chapter and the aviation community.

Happy June to our Ninety-Nines and our Friends of the Ninety-Nines!

Every month we marvel as each issue slowly reveals its own personality. This month, our June issue did not disappoint with its many "firsts" and overall good feelings. Thank you to our authors. Plane Tales would not be the same without you! Although you see this phrase on the last page of each issue, please remember that Plane Tales is sent "to a very accomplished woman: all Ninety-Nines".

There are a couple of important reminders that you will find on page one. Our Pilot of the Year Banquet is on June 9th and our planning committee asks that you RSVP by tomorrow, June 2nd. If you need an extension on your RSVP, please email us so the committee will have an approximate headcount. The second reminder is that our Ninety-Nines International Conference is being held right in our backyard (San Diego) from July 8th through July 12th. This event also asks for early RSVPs. Both events require a great deal of planning; so, your RSVPs are important to the respective committees.

Please click on the link below to view your full June issue of Plane Tales. Remember that this will be your last Plane Tales until August 1st and there are also no meetings in July. Enjoy this time of summer repose and we will be back with you all in August.

OC Ninety Nine member Dawn Bender wrote about her recent flight experience in the May issue of Plane Tales, highlighting hands on learning in a multi-engine aircraft and the impact of flying with an experienced pilot Diane Myers. Diane’s knowledge, discipline, and joy for aviation shaped the entire experience.

Learning goes far beyond the textbook. This flight was a reminder that experience, guidance, and real-world flying are where everything truly comes together.

From detailed preflight walkthroughs and systems discussions to building confidence in the cockpit, every moment added something new. Under Diane’s leadership, even complex concepts came to life, balanced with professionalism, humor, and a deep love for flying. And most importantly, a reminder that the flight deck is a place to be alive, not just stay alive.

Big congratulations to Stella on earning her Private Pilot Certificate! ✈️
She started flying a Cessna Caravan in Alaska, which quickly turned into a passion for aviation. Through school, work, maintenance delays, flight school closures, aircraft downtime, and even real in-flight emergencies, Stella stayed determined every step of the way.
Her journey is a reminder that persistence pays off. Now she’s officially a Private Pilot and already setting her sights on instrument training.
We can’t wait to see where aviation takes you next, Stella! 👏🌤️

Here's to another great issue of Plane Tales! Thank you to all of you ladies who sent us your adventures, updates, and stories. We truly appreciate you! If you would like to submit an article for Plane Tales, please send it to us, in Word format, by the 25th of the month. If you do not have Word, you can email us for other ways to send in your item(s).

If you did not receive an invitation to tonight's business meeting, please email us and we will get you the Zoom login info. Only OC Ninety-Nine members can attend the business meeting. However, our general meetings are open to guests of our members.

As well as tonight's business meeting, our chairwoman, Vera, reminded us of some upcoming events that would be interesting to attend. Three of these are listed on page one of Plane Tales, but the FAA SPANS event on Tuesday, April 7th, is not. We can always use a reminder about how to do a good aircraft checkout, so this would be a great safety seminar to attend.

*Tuesday, April 7th – Safety Seminar - Getting a Good Aircraft Checkout https://www.faasafety.gov/SPANS/event_details.aspx?eid=14260

*Wednesday, April 22nd – General Meeting - Aircraft Accident Survival by Claudia Ferguson

*Friday, April 24th – March Airfield Museum Tour

*Wednesday-Sunday, July 8-12 – 99s' International Conference in San Diego https://www.ninety-nines.org/conference.htm
