Sentinels of Freedom

Sentinels of Freedom We provide financial assistance and comprehensive support to severely wounded post-9/11 veterans.

Although many Veterans are full of passion and determination to reach their post-military goals, their transition to civilian life can prove difficult, especially if they are injured. At Sentinels of Freedom, we work to ease this transition for our scholarship recipients by providing them with a sustained period of multifaceted support so that they can become productive and self-sufficient.

The Sentinels of Freedom team recently visited the Veterans Resource Center at City College of San Francisco, where we had the opportunity to meet with Sentinel graduate and USMC Retired veteran Brian Vargas, Senior Manager of the center.

Serving approximately 1,000 student veterans each year, the center provides an important support system for veterans pursuing higher education and new career opportunities after military service.

Thank you to Brian Vargas and the entire Veterans Resource Center team for welcoming us and for the incredible work you do each day in support of student veterans.

Veterans Never Stop Serving.

This Memorial Day, we pause to honor and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.

Their courage, dedication, and selflessness are the foundation of the freedoms we live with every day.

At Sentinels of Freedom, we carry their legacy forward by supporting the men and women who continue to serve and those transitioning home.

Today, we remember. We honor. We never forget.

Delivering more than snacks. Delivering support.

Sentinels of Freedom was proud to provide a full month of snacks to the DVC Student Veterans Resource Center. These spaces are more than just rooms on campus. They are hubs of connection, support, and community for student veterans navigating their next chapter.

Something as simple as having food available can make a real difference. It creates a place where veterans can gather, recharge, and focus on their goals.

We are honored to stand alongside DVC SVRC and continue supporting those who have served.

From Sailor to Social Worker.

Chelsie Sharpe served as an Electronics Technician Third Class in the U.S. Navy, completing two deployments and traveling the world in service to her country. Like many veterans, her transition to civilian life came with challenges, including navigating PTSD, chronic pain, and the complexities of starting over.

But Chelsie didn’t stop.

Driven by her passion to help others and supported by her family, she turned her experiences into purpose. With the support of Sentinels of Freedom, Chelsie earned her Bachelor of Social Work from Texas A&M and went on to complete her Master of Social Work at the University of South Florida, all while raising a young family and navigating military life.

Today, she continues her mission, serving fellow veterans through her work in mental health care at the VA.

We are proud to stand alongside Chelsie and honored to be part of her journey.

Financial Coaching for Veteran Stability

Transitioning from military service to civilian life brings many new challenges. For veterans pursuing higher education, managing finances while building a new career path can be one of the most difficult.

Through the Sentinels of Freedom Bridge for Education program, scholars have access to financial coaching and planning designed to support long-term stability. Financial coaches help veterans develop practical budgeting skills, manage expenses while attending school, and create plans that support their future goals.

This guidance helps remove financial stress so scholars can stay focused on their education and career development.

At Sentinels of Freedom, our mission is not only to support veterans while they are in school, but to help them build strong, independent futures.

Sentinel Spotlight: Britney Domine Madison

Britney Domine Madison’s commitment to service did not end when she left the Navy. After serving as an Electronics Technician Second Class, injuries forced her to transition out of military service. Like many veterans, the path forward required resilience, determination, and support.

Through the Sentinels of Freedom Bridge for Education program, Britney received housing support and mentorship while pursuing her education at San Diego State University. Today, she is working toward a future career as a forensic anthropologist, with the goal of helping identify the remains of American service members who were Prisoners of War, Missing in Action, or Killed in Action. After working in the field she will be returning to school to pursue her MA in Anthropology this summer.

Her mission is clear: help bring our fallen heroes home and provide closure for their families.

Britney’s story is a powerful reminder that service does not end when the uniform comes off. For many Sentinels, it simply takes a new form.

April is National Volunteer Month, and we are proud to recognize the incredible mentors and volunteers who support the Sentinels of Freedom mission.

Our volunteers play a vital role in helping wounded and injured veterans transition from military service to successful civilian lives. Through mentorship, career guidance, and encouragement, they help our scholars pursue education, launch new careers, and build stable futures.

Whether reviewing a resume, preparing a scholar for an interview, or simply offering support and perspective, these mentors make a lasting difference.

To every volunteer who gives their time, experience, and encouragement: thank you for standing beside our veterans.

Veteran Transition Reality

The transition from military service to civilian life can bring unexpected challenges. After years of service, many veterans must navigate a completely new path forward.

For many, that transition includes pursuing higher education, launching new careers, building financial stability, and finding a new sense of community.

Sentinels of Freedom helps bridge that gap.

Through the Bridge for Education program, wounded and injured post-9/11 veterans receive the support they need to succeed. Mentorship, career guidance, financial coaching, and a strong community network help our scholars focus on their education and build meaningful civilian careers.

Service does not end when the uniform comes off. For many veterans, the next mission is building the future.

Another incredible Match Day milestone.

Dr. Matthew Surratt has matched with Eastern Virginia Medical School at Old Dominion University, entering the EVMS Psychiatry Residency program.

A Navy veteran who served with SEAL Team 2 and completed three combat deployments, Matthew now turns his focus to mental health and advancing care for the veteran community.

“The financial aid over the last 4 years has been so very helpful for our family. Sentinels of Freedom has been so easy to work with as well. I can’t thank everyone at SOF enough.”

This is what long-term support looks like. Stability, opportunity, and a path forward.

Join us in congratulating Matthew on this well-earned achievement.
