Celebrating Ten Years of OpenID Connect at the OpenID Summit Tokyo 2024

We held the first of three planned tenth anniversary celebrations for the completion of OpenID Connect at the OpenID Summit Tokyo 2024. The four panelists were Nov Matake, Ryo Ito, Nat Sakimura, and myself. We shared our perspectives on what led to OpenID Connect, why it succeeded, and what lessons we learned along the way.

Ten Years of OpenID Connect and Looking to the Future
Ten years ago today the drafts that would be approved as the final OpenID Connect specifications were published. The adoption of OpenID Connect has exceeded our wildest expectations. It’s fitting that the second set of errata corrections to the OpenID Connect specifications were just approved. The updated OpenID Connect specifications have just been submitted to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) for Publicly Available Submission (PAS) status. Celebrations of the tenth anniversary of the approval of OpenID Connect will occur worldwide in 2024. I can’t wait to see what the next decade brings for OpenID Connect!

In an era governed by digital transactions and data, our methods for managing digital identities, security, and privacy are proving inadequate. At the same time, consumers are looking to do business with companies that have minimal friction as part of their overall service experience, and which provide assurance that consumer’s identities and transactions are reliable and safe. Digital identity has matured from a first-in, first-out type of workflow to a multiple-input, multiple-output object-oriented entity, making it more difficult than ever for businesses to abide by the conventional wisdom of “If you can’t protect it, don’t collect it.”

In an era governed by digital transactions and data, our methods for managing digital identities, security, and privacy are proving inadequate. At the same time

The design of this specification builds upon the experiences gained in operating large-scale SAML 2.0 federations, and indeed, is authored by people having practical experience with these federations. A key innovation that differentiates OpenID Connect federations from most SAML 2.0 federations is that OpenID Connect federation employs hierarchal metadata, where participants directly publish statements about themselves, versus the aggregated metadata approach used by many SAML 2.0 federations, where the federation operator publishes a single file concatenating all the metadata for all the federation participants.

The OpenID Connect Federation 1.0 specification is being developed to enable large-scale federations to be deployed using OpenID Connect. It enables trust among
