The fostering experience: it comes with many preconceived notions. "It's too hard to take in a homeless dog. It's too hard to love a dog and then let go. The dog can't handle it."
Fostering a dog is actually one of the most unbelievably rewarding, amazing, and truly special experiences you can have.
Imagine meeting a dog whose world was just turned upside down, many times hours away from euthanasia, and suddenly they are driving away with you and have a completely new start at life. An amazing life. All because you stepped up...
Imagine spending the next few weeks caring for that dog, feeding them their first meal, watching them fall asleep, and rest away the stress. Enjoying all the joys in life they may have not experienced. Playing with you, snuggling up for pets, showing you their goofy side.
Then imagine picturing the perfect home for that dog. Maybe someone who has another dog friend for them loves weekend hikes and lots of outdoor adventures. Someone who will love them and give them everything they deserve and more!
Then that day comes! It can be bitter sweet. You may have pictured this dog in your life, but the timing isn't right, or you already have another dog or you want to keep fostering and saving more dogs. But you know deep down, this dog has a perfect home waiting. You get to watch the connection between the new family and your foster dog. You remember that unsure dog just a few weeks ago who was on the brink of an unknown fate, and now you watch this dog blossom and fall into the arms of this wonderful adopter.
You say goodbye. Yes, it's hard. The first few fosters can be especially sad to say goodbye to. It's hard to love and let go. But once you get through it, the other side is so magical.
You start getting updates. You see photos of your foster running in the snow with their new people, meeting the family and friends, and enjoying all the love and snuggles you once gave him. And at that moment, you know it was all worth it. You changed that dogs life forever. You changed that person's life forever. You feel the most amazing feeling that you will remember for eternity...
And then you can't wait to do it all over again ♥️
