Buildit is profoundly honored with its collaboration with Webcor which began in June 2020 when we launched our efforts across the West Coast, North America and Globally.

Webcor’s history within the context of BuildIT began in September 2013 as the first contractor in the United States to produce an outreach event for a public works project (the $2.1B Phase One of the Salesforce Transit Center in downtown San Francisco which will eventually be the northern terminus of the California High Speed Rail) that focused on engaging with LGBT/Allied specialty contractors, material suppliers, and professionals.

They have since developed multiple Employee Resource Groups including – Qu**rs & Allies – a group focused on fostering inclusion, belonging, leadership development, and allyship for LGBTQ+ employees while positively influencing both company culture and the broader construction industry.

Webcor is currently building some of the largest public works projects in California and they are committed to hiring local and small businesses and professionals in every city, county, and region they work in.

Thank you, Webcor for being a steadfast supporter of all businesses that build our communities!

BuildIT was honored to be a Presenting Partner at the News-Record FutureTech 2026 Conference held from May 4–6 at the Hilton San Francisco Union Square—an energizing gathering of leaders shaping the future of the AEC industry.

As a Presenting Partner, BuildIT was especially excited to be part of the conversations driving innovation forward. A big thank you to Scott Seltz, ENR Publisher, and ENR Editor-in-Chief Scott Blair for convening such a dynamic program of speakers and roundtables.

Across sessions, one theme stood out: AI is no longer theoretical—it’s here, and it’s transforming how we plan, design, and build. From practical applications already delivering value, to candid discussions around data readiness, risk, and workforce adaptation, the dialogue struck a balance between opportunity and realism.

The expo floor reinforced that momentum, showcasing a wide range of emerging technologies and solutions pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in the built environment.

We left FutureTech inspired by the pace of innovation—and energized by the collective commitment to responsibly advancing AI across the industry.

Building Bigger/Stronger Collaborations in Seattle and the Pacific Northwest!

BuildIT was honored to join our partners at Turner Construction Company, Flatiron/Dragados (https://www.fdcorp.com/en) and the North Coast States Carpenters Union in Seattle on Wednesday, April 29th to discuss workforce development, training programs and the billions of dollars of infrastructure development taking place in Washington State and the Pacific Northwest (PNW).

For several years BuildIT has been partners with the Northern California Carpenters Union under the leadership of Jay Bradshaw, Cesar Sanchez, and Nancy Mateu. Earlier this year the Union announced they had re-organized to become the North Coast States Carpenters Union (NCSCU) so that their geographic region now includes all of Washington, Oregon and northern California - south to the Bakersfield region of the Central Valley.

It was with great pride that BuildIT brought together the executive leadership of Turner Construction and Flatiron/Dragados for this meeting with Jay and his leadership team from the PNW. With discussion topics ranging from marine workforce training programs, small business utilization, Sound Transit, King County, the upcoming naval shipyard projects throughout Puget Sound, to mass timber projects and high-rise developments – it was an incredibly lively discussion with a lot of shared values and opportunities for collaboration.

Thank you to Katie Trimpe and her team from Turner Construction (great new offices, by the way!) to Richard Grabinski, Travis Kraupa and Dave Horn from F/D – to the amazing Jay Bradshaw, Dan Nuncio and Antonio Acosta from the NCSCU.

There is a lot of work to be done… together!

BuildIT is proud to highlight one of our most remarkable champions, advocates, connectors, and construction industry utilization experts on the ‘eve’ of his recognition by the Non
Non-Profit Housing Association of Northern California.

Mick Penn serves as the Northern California Regional Director of Community Relations for Swinerton, where he drives workforce development, small, diverse, veteran, and LGBT business engagement, and strategic community partnerships across the region.

Mick works to ensure Swinerton’s construction projects create real pathways for local talent, emerging contractors, and community-based organizations. Mick serves on the boards of the Western Regional Minority Supplier Development Council, Cypress Mandela Training Center, Mission Hiring Hall, and Build It Green. He also contributes to the Associated General Contractors of California DEI Steering Committee and is a founder of BuildIT

To BuildIT he is tireless in his efforts to ensure that LGBT & Allied firms, professionals and interns have a seat at the table. Mick’s efforts lead to qualified LGBT & Allied contractors and material suppliers receiving meaningful contracts (in the millions of dollars in many cases), and building national role models for collaboration as in the 1939 Market Street Project in San Francisco that will provide affordable housing for LGBTQ Seniors.

We celebrate Mick and congratulate the NPH for presenting this award to Mick at NPH’s Annual Gala held Thursday, April 30, 2026.

About the NPH

NPH is the proud voice of affordable housing across the San Francisco Bay Area. Their members, partners, and supporters stand strong together to develop and pass critical policies to create change for our communities. Their events, programs, and trainings bring people together to grow our industry’s capacity, advance equity, foster connections and community, and ensure that we’re working collaboratively to develop, pass, and implement critical housing solutions for all of our community members, regardless of race, income, and personal background.

On Wednesday April 22, 2026, BuildIT joined Associated General Contractors of California to make the case for AB 1885 to the Assembly Government Organization Committee.Ural Yal, CEO of Shimmick Corporation, and Paul Pendergast, president of BuildIT testified, in the California State Capital in Sacramento, in support of the AGC-sponsored State Contract Retention Reform Act, explaining in concrete terms what retention withholding costs California contractors: working capital tied up for years, financing costs for payroll that can run 8 to 9 percent, loss of new job creation, and barriers that lock small/medium sized contractors out of the competitive bidding process.Thank you to Assemblymember Juan Carrillo for authoring this bill, and to the coalition partners which include:

Since launching in 2022, BuildIT Founders Day has been shaped by partners who show up not just as sponsors, but as active contributors to the community. Jacobs Solutions Inc. has been one of those partners from the very beginning.

In 2023, Jacobs team member Vigor Lam stepped in to lead backstage operations to bring the program to life, while Chief Legal Officer Joanne Caruso and former Executive Vice President and Corporate Secretary Justin Johnson joined as a featured speaker.

In 2024, Vigor and former Jacobs colleague Daniel Souza were recognized with the Built Community Impact Award for their dedication to mentoring and supporting the next generation of AEC professionals.

That spirit of leadership and involvement has continued, with Vigor serving as Founders Day Co-Chair in 2025 and again in 2026 as we head back to San Francisco.

We’re grateful for partners like Jacobs who continue to invest in people, community, and the future of the industry. If you’ll be joining us this year, we look forward to seeing you there.
