Mexico’s Crisis of Enforced Disappearances: A Call for International Action

As the United Nations General Assembly convenes, Global Exchange, Consultoría Solidaria, and more than 100 Mexican organizations are calling for international action under Article 34 of the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance.

Earlier this year, the UN Committee on Enforced Disappearances took the historic step of invoking Article 34, finding reasonable grounds to believe that enforced disappearances in Mexico are occurring on a widespread or systematic basis and may constitute crimes against humanity.

The UN General Assembly’s Third Committee is scheduled to address Mexico’s crisis of enforced disappearances during its October–November 2026 session.

Global Exchange joins Mexican organizations and collectives of families searching for their loved ones in calling on the Mexican State to cooperate with the international mechanisms proposed by the Committee and pursue truth and justice for the more than 135,000 people who have been disappeared in Mexico since the 1980s.

Behind every number is a person, a family, and a community demanding truth and justice. The search for their loved ones must not stop.

Hoy, 26 de septiembre, se cumplen 12 años de la desaparición de los 43 estudiantes normalistas de Ayotzinapa.

Desde Global Exchange acompañamos a las madres y padres de los estudiantes desaparecidos de Ayotzinapa, a las organizaciones que caminan a su lado y a aquellas personas que han abonado a los procesos de verdad y justicia.

A 12 años, lo primordial sigue siendo: encontrar a los estudiantes y saber qué les pasó.
