Human rights organizations, migrant groups, farmers and advocacy organizations, as well as independent unions in Mexico and the United States, have historically denounced the roots of inequality, racism, colonialism, and sexism, among others, as structural causes of inequality, poverty, exploitation, armed violence, disappearances, forced displacement and the migration that weighs on millions of people in the region, particularly women, afro-descendant, indigenous peoples and youth.

The People’s Movement for Peace and Justice has worked for more than three years to strengthen a friendly relationship between the two countries, proposing the Binational Agenda for Peace and Justice and the Human Rights Agenda within the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement as legitimate exercises in binational citizen participation and advocacy.

Yesterday, Global Exchange and the People’s Movement for Peace and Justice, alongside the USMCA Advocacy Assembly and numerous organizations and coalitions like the Movement for Our Disappeared in Mexico, Greenpeace and Amnesty International, unfurled a giant 20-meter banner from a building in downtown Mexico City to remind the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, that human and environmental rights matter more than the World Cup.

As communities across the country continue to raise concerns about disappearances, migration, gun violence, dispossession, forced displacement, and environmental injustice, we urged President Claudia Sheinbaum to place the well-being of people and communities ahead of any commercial interests, including the renegotiation of the USMCA.

We also call on the Mexican government to engage directly with Mexican civil society to address this urgent challenges and we unequivocally reject any attempt by the United States to exploit these challenges as a pretext for intervention, political interference, economic coercion, or attacks on Mexico’s sovereignty.

The world is watching.
