Common Sense Media We rate, educate, and advocate for kids, families, and schools. https://linktr.ee/CommonSenseOrg We believe in media sanity, not censorship.

We believe that media has truly become "the other parent" in our kids' lives, powerfully affecting their mental, physical, and social development. We believe in teaching our kids to be savvy, respectful and responsible media interpreters, creators, and communicators. We can’t cover their eyes but we can teach them to see. We believe parents should have a choice and a voice about the media our kids consume and create. Every family is different but all need information. We believe that the price for free and open media is a bit of extra homework for families. Parents need to know about the media their kids use and need to teach responsible, ethical behavior as well as manage overall media use. We believe that through informed decision making, we can improve the media landscape one decision at a time. We believe appropriate regulations about right time, right place, and right manner exist. They need to be upheld by our elected and appointed leaders. We believe in age-appropriate media and that the media industry needs to act responsibly as it creates and markets content for each audience. We believe ratings systems should be independent and transparent for all media. We believe in diversity of programming and media ownership.

Looking for screen-free activities for your kids now that the school year is in full swing? 🏞️☀️

Finding the right balance can be hard. Phones are part of the classroom, social lives, and even family safety, while AI is becoming a tutor, search engine, and chat buddy. ⚖️📱

That’s why we teamed up with Aura for Parents to create a screen-free activities quiz that gives you a personalized list of ideas for the next time your kids say, “I’m bored!” 👎

Find your family’s next screen-free activity! Take the quiz at the link in our bio. 📲

$25 billion. That’s what New Mexico just made Meta pay for misleading users about privacy.

This ruling is a big sign that companies are finally being held accountable for how they use people’s data, and for what they claim to do with it, including when it comes to kids and families.

This one hits close to home for us. Our founder and CEO, Jim Steyer, and Common Sense Media have been fighting for privacy protections for years, like helping pass California’s privacy law and leading the ballot initiative that strengthened it.

If you took a quick look at Jolly (the Muse mascot), would you think it’s the mascot for an adults-only AI agent? 🧸

In our testing, a credit card was the only thing standing between kids and Muse. And when we explicitly told it we were 16, it didn’t ban us.

Plus, Muse pulls details about your relationships (yes, including your kids) from your messages and photos, even if they never sign up.

Swipe for what families need to know, and what you can do about it. 👉

Let us know in the poll: Do you use Muse? 🧸

AI chatbots are showing up everywhere in kids’ lives lately, and if you’re a parent or caregiver wondering “Is this actually safe for my kid?” or “At what age is this even appropriate?”—you’re not alone.

The truth is, it depends a lot on your child’s age and stage of development. What works for a 12-year-old looks totally different from what’s appropriate for a 6-year-old.

That’s why we put together an Age & Stages guide to help you navigate it all and give you better alternatives for your kids. Watch the full video or check out the guide through the link in our bio!

Thought you were just getting some nostalgic action? Think again 🥋

We rated Street Fighters 2 stars (OK for 13+) for intense martial arts violence but that’s not all….there’s also a full-on Taco Bell product placement and more!

Before you go, talk to your kids about the violence and ask them:

❓ Was it exciting, shocking, or meant to be funny? Why does that matter?
❓ Does it stack up to what you remember about the game?

Big conversations don’t have to be awkward. 🎙️

Our Director of Research, Supreet Mann, recently chatted with Cara Natterson, MD + Vanessa Kroll Bennett about the real issues kids and parents face today when it comes to online safety and tough topics, including AI deepfakes.

These conversations don’t have to be as complicated as you might think. Instead of jumping straight to a sexually explicit deepfake of a classmate, you could start with something like a fake photo of a penguin holding a hot dog. 🐧

91% of boys are being exposed to body image content online—and the impact is deeper than you might think.

Our 2025 research report, “Boys in the Digital Wild”, found that boys with high exposure to digital masculinity content are 4x more likely to feel they need to change their looks.

At our recent 2026 Common Sense Summit, Dr. Jason Nagata (Pediatrician & Professor at UCSF) sat down with us to break down how these unrealistic expectations and the “steroid culture” on social media are affecting youth mental health and body satisfaction.

After 4,000 texts, we found ChatGPT for teens to be an unacceptable risk for kids. 🚨

We tested how ChatGPT for teens handles high-risk statements from teens, and the results show there’s still a long way to go on safety protocols and parental alerts. We already know kids are turning to AI chatbots for things they don’t want to talk to adults about, especially when they’re feeling vulnerable. That’s why this work is so important.
