Curebound is a 501c3 philanthropic organization that raises and invests strategic funding into innovative cancer research among San Diego’s top research institutions. Curebound’s unique grantmaking platform fosters collaboration among specialized teams enabling the brightest minds to work together to drive the work faster and further, producing better outcomes for patients who need them today. To date, Curebound has awarded more than $35 million for collaborative cancer research, funding 115 grants that explore all different types of cancer, adult and pediatric.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

With support from a $500,000 Curebound 2023 Targeted Grant, Dr. Andrew Sharabi (UC San Diego) and his collaborators, which includes long time Challenger Dr. Rebecca Shatsky of the Comprehensive Breast Health Center, tested a new immunotherapy approach that helps different parts of the immune system work together to fight head and neck and breast cancers. Their research led to better tumor control and improved survival in preclinical models. These findings contributed to two published papers, a manuscript in revision at Science, and helped generate the data that secured nearly $4 million in additional National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding.

A special evening yesterday honoring Curebound co-founder Fernanda Whitworth and her family. Fe & Ralph Whitworth established the Immunotherapy Foundation in 2015 to transform precision cancer immunotherapy research into better treatments for patients. Sadly, Ralph lost his battle with cancer ten years ago. He is deeply missed, and we were proud to honor his vision through Curebound's continued work.

Thanks to the relentless spirit of more than 170 teams, survivors, families, donors and sponsors, we are proud to announce a fundraising total of $4.65M, and thanks to the generosity of Curebound’s partners, 100% of participant-raised funds of $3.8M will go directly to cancer research!

We can’t wait to see our Challenge community next year on August 7!
