The San Diego Section of the American Nuclear Society is the local section of the ANS for Southern California. If you have interest in nuclear science and technology, we invite you to become a member. We hold periodic (~bimonthly) dinner meetings with a speaker on a topic of interest. In addition, we conduct student education and public information and outreach activities. Local section membership

is possible for $10 annually or through national ANS membership. The American Nuclear Society (ANS) is a not-for-profit, international, scientific and educational organization. It was established by a group of individuals who recognized the need to unify the professional activities within the various fields of nuclear science and technology. December 11, 1954, marks the Society’s historic beginning at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C. ANS has since developed a diverse membership composed of approximately 11,000 engineers, scientists, administrators, and educators representing 1,600 plus corporations, educational institutions, and government agencies. It is governed by four officers and a board of directors elected by the membership. The ANS website can be viewed at

Vision: ANS will be the recognized, credible advocate for advancing and promoting nuclear science and technology. Mission: ANS provides its members with opportunities for professional development. It also serves the nuclear community by creating a forum for sharing information and advancements in technology, and by engaging the public and policymakers through communication outreach. Purpose: The core purpose of ANS is to promote the awareness and understanding with regard to the application of nuclear science and technology. Officers (July 2023 – June 2024):

The American Nuclear Society San Diego Section held its Annual Meeting on June 19, 2024, featuring significant updates and discussions. The election results for FY 2025 are as follows:

- Chair: Katherine Partain
- Vice Chair: Florian Effenberg
- Secretary/Treasurer: Ron Petzoldt
- Executive Committee: Ted Quinn, Mehdi Sarram, Julia Taylor

Ron Petzoldt provided a detailed presentation on the section's revenue and expenses over the past year. Katherine Partain reviewed the section's activities, which included seven section meetings and events, three involving National Nuclear Science Week, and several other events such as tours and dinner meetings. A key highlight of the meeting was Mehdi Sarram's comprehensive presentation on climate change. He emphasized the critical role of nuclear power and renewable energy in combating global warming.
