This Memorial Day, we gather to honor a hero.

Corporal Patrick "Bob" Gallagher was born in Ballyhaunis, County Mayo, Ireland. He crossed an ocean, joined the United States Marines, and in 1967 — during Operation Prairie in Vietnam — threw himself on a gr***de to save the lives of his fellow Marines. He was awarded the Navy Cross. He was 23 years old. He was not yet an American citizen.

He chose to serve anyway.

On Monday, May 25, 2026 at 11:00 AM, Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial invites you to join us as we honor Cpl. Gallagher's extraordinary courage and sacrifice — and the 250-year thread of American valor etched into these walls.
