The blue skies are showing no sign of another storm coming, so we’re not quite sure what’s happening with the weather. 😅

The roofers managed to do some work on D Room early this morning before the winds picked up again. The clinic room has a tree branch sticking through it, but thankfully the roof itself is still intact.

I think we all inhaled half of the Gobi Desert yesterday. 😩 Everyone who rushed to the Safehouse during the storm is coughing and feeling pretty miserable today.

But we’re safe, and that’s what matters.

Thank you all so much for your donations and kind messages. We got such a shock yesterday. The fear was overwhelming. My biggest fear was that C Room would lose its roof. That’s where many of our smallest and most vulnerable dogs live, and my mind immediately went to the worst-case scenario.

Thankfully, everyone is okay.

The damage can be repaired. Roofs can be rebuilt. What matters is that every person and every dog is safe.

The Internet and 4G is down still.
The safehouse has no electricity or water.
Roofers are at the safehouse but Tony just said it’s too dangerous for them so work has to stop.

I’ll update as much as we can.

The vet called summer and said the sand can effect their breathing / lungs and so on.

The sand storm is over. The winds are picking up again but not suppose to be as strong as this afternoon. Mike. Tony. Summer and Three aunties will sleep at the cat base tonight to stay close.

At 5:30pm today, a sandstorm ripped through the safehouse and across the city.

At the time, only one auntie and one vet tech were at the base. Uncle and the other uncle had just finished dropping workers home.

Within minutes, the storm tore the roof completely off D Room and damaged the clinic roof as well as Uncle and Auntie’s home. Trees and pieces of roofing blocked every road leading into the village.

Workers from all over abandoned their cars, got out in the middle of the storm, and ran up the road to reach the dogs.

As I write this, I’m bawling.

Yes, because our beautiful safehouse has been damaged. But more than that, because of the love these people have for these animals. They risked their own safety to get here.

Thankfully every single person and every single dog is alive.

The dogs are stressed and frightened, but they are safe.

The winds are expected to pick up again tonight, so the damaged roofing has been removed to prevent further danger. A temporary tarp has been secured over D Room, and the dogs have been moved into crates and squeezed into every available space throughout the safehouse.

Tony has already arranged for roofers to arrive at 6am tomorrow morning to begin repairs. We don’t know the cost yet.

It has been a truly terrifying few hours.

But tonight reminded me that the safehouse is not the buildings. It is not the roofs.

It is the people.

The people who run into a storm when 1,482 dogs need them.

And for that, I will be forever grateful ❤️
