We’re pleased to share our latest SURVIVORS newsletter, highlighting recent work across local and national spaces.

From presenting a literature review at the NCTTP 2026 Consortium in Washington, D.C., to community outreach, partnerships, and advocacy efforts throughout the San Diego region, our team continues to expand access to care and support for survivors of torture and forced displacement.

This issue also features a video recap of our recent conversation with author Valeria Luiselli, along with upcoming opportunities to stay engaged, including a conversation with author Lauren Markham.

Join us for a special, intimate conversation with acclaimed author Valeria Luiselli () happening tomorrow at 5:30 PM PST.

This discussion will explore storytelling, migration, and the ways we bear witness to human experience - work that deeply aligns with the mission of SURVIVORS.

Luiselli’s writing spans novels, essays, and other works that illuminate the complexities of displacement, language, and care. We’re honored to create space for this conversation and would love for you to be part of it.

A heartfelt thank you to the incredible team at Cygnet Theatre for generously donating tickets for members of the SURVIVORS clinical team to attend Somewhere Over the Border.

The play explores themes of migration, family, identity, and resilience - stories that resonate deeply with the work we do every day alongside individuals rebuilding their lives after trauma and displacement. Our team was incredibly moved by the performance and grateful for the opportunity to experience such powerful storytelling together.

Moments like this remind us how the arts can create space for reflection, empathy, and connection. We are so grateful for the support of our local San Diego community and for partners like who help bring these stories to life.

Thank you for including our team in this meaningful evening 💛

Last week, SURVIVORS had the honor of hosting an iftar gathering for members of our community, a moment to pause, share a meal, and come together during Ramadan. 🌙

We are deeply grateful to for generously donating a delicious meal that made the evening possible. Sharing food is such a powerful way to build connection and community, and their kindness helped create a welcoming space for reflection and togetherness.

Thank you to the team at Tahini for supporting our clients and helping us celebrate this meaningful time.

SURVIVORS’ Clinical Team was honored to attend the 2026 Binational Social Work Conference last Friday - a powerful gathering focused on cross-border social work, migration, and community health.

Hosted in by .social.work and held at Centro Cultural de la Raza, the conference brought together practitioners, students, and educators to address the realities shaping communities along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Through workshops and panels on migration, trauma-informed care, and ethical cross-border practice, our team strengthened partnerships and shared insights grounded in healing and dignity.

We’re grateful to be part of this vital, binational work. 🇺🇸🫶🏽🇲🇽

SURVIVORS invites you to join us for our upcoming Virtual Townhall. During this conversation, we’ll share updates on the current landscape we’re navigating, the challenges and opportunities shaping our work, and how SURVIVORS continues to show up for our clients and broader community.

We’re honored to once again welcome Elizabeth Lopez, Immigration Attorney and Board Vice Chair at SURVIVORS, who will offer insights into pressing immigration issues impacting survivors and their families and help answer questions from participants.

We’re also grateful to be joined by Erica Gomes, LCSW and contracted psychological evaluator for SURVIVORS, who brings over 20 years of clinical experience and will share updates and reflections from her work with clients.

This Townhall is an opportunity to reconnect with our team, hear timely updates, and engage in thoughtful, meaningful dialogue about the work we’re doing, together.

Members of the SURVIVORS staff attended several community events this month, including the All People’s Celebration in Balboa Park and the MLK Harmony Health Festival at Waterfront Park ☀️

Healing doesn’t just happen in the clinical setting. It happens in parks, at festivals, and in community spaces like these. We appreciate the organizers who brought people together for these gatherings and the space they created for connection and reflection.

This is part of what food security looks like at SURVIVORS.

Survivors of torture and trauma rebuilding their lives need consistent access to nutritious food as a foundation for safety, stability, and healing.

As our Executive Director Etleva Bejko shared in a recent statement with , investing in food security is essential not only to human rights, but to strong, resilient communities.

Healing doesn’t always happen all at once.

More often, it shows up quietly, when someone starts saying yes again.

Yes to work.
Yes to school.
Yes to community.
Yes to themselves.

This year at SURVIVORS, we’ve seen these quiet wins again and again. They happen through consistent care, trusted relationships, and showing up day after day - especially in a moment that feels challenging and destabilizing for many of the people we serve.

As we close out the year, we’re asking our community to help sustain this work. A year-end gift helps ensure survivors continue to have access to steady, compassionate care when they need it most.

From our team to you 🤍

As the year comes to a close, we’re taking a moment to pause with gratitude.

This season, we are deeply thankful for our clients, partners, supporters, volunteers, and community members who make healing possible every day. Your trust, generosity, and solidarity continue to shape a community grounded in care, compassion, and connection.

From all of us at SURVIVORS, we wish you a season of warmth and rest, and a new year filled with hope and possibility ✨

Gratitude in action 💛

This smile says it all. Thanks to your generosity, this crib (along with so many other essentials) will help a family create a safe, stable space during a time of healing.

We are deeply thankful to everyone who has supported our community this season, whether through financial contributions or by purchasing items from our Amazon Wish List. Your care shows up in very real, tangible ways.

Additionally, there are still other urgent needs on our list, including two twin beds for a family whose children are currently sleeping on the floor, as well as winter essentials through our Blanket Drive (found on our Amazon Wish List under the “Blanket Drive” tag).

If you feel called to continue supporting this work, a donation or an item from our Wish List helps ensure families have what they need in the months ahead. Thank you for being part of this community and for making moments like this possible.
